rockefe11er
Hello, I have a 1990 Pathy with an AT and I seem to be having trouble keeping it in 1st gear. I just had the transmission rebuilt and I could't tel you how it shifted before that I bought it aware of the need for a transmission rebuild. Anyhow I can't get it to go into first gea all the time which is killing me coming down big hills especially in the snow. It won't go into 1st so I'm not getting my crawler gear. My question is to see if anyone has a way to force the transmission into first gear. Maybe a cheater switch that would force it into or if anyone knows if there is an adjustment. I do have the E-AT switch which keep sit in 1st for awhile but it seems like after its warmed up it will stay in second. Any advise would help its embarrasing trying to climg a hill in 2nd and just plain scary trying to roll down a hill at 35 MPH.
88pathoffroad
Did you get an external cooler put on it? DO NOT use the stock cooler, it will kill the trans over time. Other than that, mystery shifting problems are largely undiagnosable until you open up the trans to see what's wrong with it...there aren't any real user-serviceable parts in there besides the filter inside the pan. I'd take it back to the shop that rebuilt it and see what they say, but they may want you to pay for them to mess with it.
5523Pathfinder
Make sure the linkage is moving the park PAWL correctly. If you put it in first and it doesnt engauge first, either there is a control valve issue or someone missed a checkball. Tough to diag like what 88 said. rockefe11er
So since the forum was down I had to act. I took it back to the shop to discuss what was happening. Heres what we came up with, the computer can overide the shift lever as a safety feature if the RPMS are too high for a given period of time. The interesting thing about my shift problem is that if I turn the vehicale all the way off and turn it back on it will go back into first. So somehow the CPU is telling my trans to go into second but it won;t let it go back into first once it has done so. I did get an aftermarket cooler put in when I got the rebuild. I have to take my pathy out in the hills tommorow to double check and make sure it is not the linkage that prevents it from dropping into first gear. I hope it is the linkage if not I'm stuck. I typically manually put the lever into first when I climb or descend a hill, so we will see.
88pathoffroad
Check and make sure they didn't hook up the new cooler with the stock one. It can still kill the trans if they did it inline like that.
rockefe11er
I will update you guys on my fix once I get this problem figured out. In the meantime does anyone have a transmission diagnostic guide? I remeber seeing one somewhere on the internet but I haven't ever been able to find it again. If someone know the whereabouts of one I would appreciate it. I need to determine what the blinking during start up means. Thanks
88pathoffroad
Search these very forums and you'll find that AT diagnosis thread.
