Intermittent Problem

Hi,

 

I'm new to the group. My Pathfinder has a problem that I just cannot fully diagnose. It runs great for months at a time. Then without warning it will start to stall whenever you come to a stop. It re-starts immediately and does so over & over while it is doing this. Normally it idles at approximately 1,050 RPM. The only way to get it back to normal is to let it sit until the engine is totally cold. Then it will start normally and run fine for months until one random day it starts over. I have checked the trouble codes and only gotten an "open air circuit" trouble code. the other day I got a detonation sensor code that said in my manual a techgnician would have to repair. I have spoken to the local dealer and they need me to bring it by when it is doing this and let them put it on the analyser. the sucky thing is, that it costs $90.00 for this little plug-in. Any help would be great.

I have checked the trouble codes and only gotten an "open air circuit" trouble code

 

I'm not sure what that means (refer to the Garage/how to section on reading the EUC, it may enlighten you) but I would advise checking/cleaning all sensor connections that are accessable. It shouldn't take too long and is a culprit with many sensors, including the MAFS (which it never hurts to clean. Refer to the same section for instructions).

Knock sensor ? A few people have had to replace theirs, but it is a pain as it is located under the intake manifold. A few people have simply cut the old one out of the loop and installed a new unit up on the bell housing. Maritime Man and lgranch I believe. I can try to dig up the info if you wish.
