So am sittin in bumper to bumper traffic for about an hour in NYC today with 100 degree temps and my check engine light came on. After I got out of the traffic and started to moving again the light went off. My temp gauge never moved past it's normal point. So am wondering why the light went off, I thought the light is suppose to stay on until you can find out what the code number is.

the light will come on and stay on for a "hard" fault...that is, a fault that the ecu constantly sees....a "soft" fault, the light will come on and go off as the ecu sees it, but it still remains in memory....you can still pull the codes w/o the being on....
