  1. For you guys that have done new headers I have 3 questions.

What kind of time would this project take for the novice mechanic?

    Any kind of unusual/unexpected problems?

How much interference, what had to come off to get in there?

I don't know if you have a manual or auto, but I just completed the job on my '92 5 speed Pathy. I am a complete Nissan novice....

It took about 2 weeks (few hrs a day..leave to buy parts..etc). I took the motor out completely, and there was no way I would have got the job done if I hadn't.

One stud (out of the 3 broken) didn't want to come out 100%, (the other 2 were a REAL PITA) so we drilled it out to 3/8, and I put a 3/8 stud in there. I got the other studs from Nissan.

I replaced all my belts, and h2o pump, clutch, cleaned the whole motor and added an oil filter relocation kit. I installed the Thorley headers.

I gained 4-5mpg out of my job, as the rear main seal was leaking, and spewing oil all over my clutch...so it was slipping all the time.

I did a lot of other things to my motor too.... I have lots of pictures if you need any.

The idiot proof way I did my removal was to get a bunch of different colored sticky labels, and everything I disconnected, both ends got labelled, such as a rad hose..one end got a pink sticker, with say..X1, X2, X3 etc..and the end I took it from got the same sticker color and number. it was sooooo much eaier when it came time to put everything back together.... and I had no loose or unidentified wires or plugs.

If you need pics..let me know...

    Good luck!!!!!!! WAVEY

  2. -bounce- I would definitely ( I have just installed mine) recommend the Thorley headers... I paid $340 for mine from Summit Racing in January. Also... if you're going with the headers, of any kind, invest in the Perma Cool oil filter relocation kit..$48 @ Summit. I installed one on mine, and it is great. I would have died trying to get the oil filter off with the Thorleys in the way!

I invested in the JGC coils, and some Rancho 5000's (p/n 5116) for mine..but, again, Idon't have a lift of any kind.

I don't have a lift ....YET...so I can't help ya with the tire thing... but...good luck!! I want to see pics when you're done!!

  3. I am in California, and I am one of the psycho's who just (I mean..drove the Pathy for the first time today inna month) did the manifold job.

I have a 4 door 5 speed...and the bolts were a BIATCH. I had 3 broken studs....but the way she ran today..was worth the headaches! I have sweet Thorley headers on her..and lot's of new goodies. But it was a HUGE pain in teh a$$....if you have time...

She runs a LOT better now..and is quiet and smooth...and it gave me a good excuse to get the Thorleys! ehhehe sssh sly

  4. any suggestions, is my logic flawed that if I can crawl my front over an obstacle the rear will follow....

    thanks

-alcohol- I sure hope the back follows the front.....sorry..couldn't resist!

Are you after manual lockers or air lockers? sssh

I bought Superwinch manual lockers for $100.... they are sealed and we use them a lot..with never having seen one fail yet...

  5. Only for the VG30E 90-95 crowd...VG30i's in the 87-89's have a circular aircleaner with no way to seal it up for a snorkel. *snif snif* :(

    HEHEHE.. I have a 92 Pathy with the VG30E.....c'mon over...I got the booze...pizza...

  6. OMG. I know this has nothing to do with the actual issue..but my aunt lives in Morristown..and I was born in Passaic NJ...and they have a house on LBI too...hehehe ....sorry! Back to the subject.

U R better off trying to do it yourself..really...you will pay twice as much for the labor, as the actual lift cost....

  7. Well..lemme see...in the actual cd player is GODSMACK (yeah baby!)

and in the cd changer is :::

    DISTURBED

    ASSORTED COUNTRY MIX I MADE

    BRAD PAISLEY

    TOBY KEITH

    ROCK OF THE 80'S MIX

    ASSORTED HIP HOP MIX

Can't say I don't have a slightly mixed taste in music..... -bounce-

  8. Wondering if it is "safe" to clean the inside of my intake plentum while I have it off my 92 Pathy (VG30E motor)...and if so..what is the best stuff to use? Will it hurt anything spraying carb cleaner in it and holding it so the cleaner runs directly back out? or does anyone know what else can be safely used?? -bounce-
  9. "wicked nice" suprises are good. Glad you lucked out.

My block and heads are fine, I did not have to replace anything but the manifolds, and with the new headers..problem solved.

As for the parts run down, if you're just doing the job I am.. then this is a list of the following basics you'll need (what I bought):

    Water pump $100

    Timing Belt $26

New Headers (my Thorleys came with everything you need to install them) $338

    O2 Sensor $101

Clutch Kit (incl. throw out bearing) $179

    Motor Oil

    Coolant

Valve Cover Gaskets (if they're leaking)

Have your starter motor checked and rebuilt or buy a new one (it's a PITA to get out without removing some stuff..better to be safe..)

Oil Filter Relocation Kit (I got a Perma Coll from Summit) $45

Check all other belts for cracks and cuts (I replaced all 3 for $23)

PB Blaster (2 cans at least! and USE THEM) $7 for 2

No doubt I forgot something...

I bought a lot of other stuff..but no necessarily in regard to this job.

This job is turning out to be a reaaaaaaaaal PITA. We went to pull the motor..and now we have to take more (big) stuff off.. I am disenchanted right now with it..but I know it will be like having a new truck when I'm done...just have to go through more hassle and time to get there! My boyfriend is good at making me look at the bright side of this..LOL

(I haven't found it yet....but sure I will once the motor is actually out)

Here is the link to the pictures of what I've done so far...and how I did it.

Neon sticky labels and zip lock baggies are fabulous! (That's what all the bright colored tabs are..I numbered everything I took off that I would not know where to put it back..be like paint by numbers going back together! lol) Very helpful indeed.

  10. ;) I am doing the job you are talking about right now (my maiden voyage into my motor, so far so good.. 2 broken manifold bolts out of 6 is good for what I thought was broken). I will be posting pics (somehow) when I am done with everything.

If you get aftermarket (non Nissan) headers, such as the Doug Thorley headers, (you will not need to replace the manifolds as the headers take care of that problem), most everyone is running them (I have them too), the design of the Thorleys will cure the problem of the bolts breaking from bad design again. The will also offer more power than stock (better flow). I got mine (as most everyone has) from Summit Racing for $338 to my door.

If you need any other prices, part numbers on the general things you will have to replace...I still have everything I bought (boxes/bags/etc) with PN's.

ARB.com pretty much own the market on bumpers, and Calmini.com seems to be the best for lifts. Superlift also make good lifts for Pathys. rancho or Pro Comp both seem to work well on Pathys (shocks).

Summit Racing's phone number is 1-800-230-3030 They are great. (their number is on my speed dial!!) LOL

    Good Luck! :aok:
