  1. Yep, that's my thinking. My primary car (subaru) was getting up there in miles and was going to start needing some TLC so I decided to sell it and focus on the pathfinder. In a year or two I'll start shopping for a used econo commuter car, at which time I'll have a perfectly up-kept Blue Belle. I'm assuming the MAF is the air filter.
  2. Thanks Kyle! I'll be tearing into it today. The only thing auto on my pf is the hubs...for now. I figured it would be easy enough to fix, but last night while making another post I thought the question might be worth asking...on the off chance that somebody would come back with "oh yes, there is an undocumented fusible link that feeds only the heater illumination and radio display. It's located under the passenger side turn-signal bulb." I'm assuming my radio is the original based purely on the common complain of missing and tiny knobs. I guess I could upgrade my stereo while at it. Thanks!
  3. Well Blue Belle is now my daily driver, so it's time to fix some minor issues that have been annoying me from day one. The lights in the heater/ac control don't work and neither does the radio display. The heater blows hot, the ac blows cold, and the radio works just fine...except the display. Tomorrow I plan on digging into the dash and hope to find a loose or broken wire, but if anyone can give a hint it would be much appreciated. I suppose it could be two separate issues, but their proximity makes me think it's a single problem. The FSM electrical diagrams don't show any shared fuse or harness that I can see, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.
  4. Blue Belle, my 95 XE is getting some serious attention now. She was bought off a friend 3 years ago and has been my backup ride/weekend woodsrunner. With 130k+ miles, I new she needed a new timing belt but kept putting it off. Anyway, she's been upgraded to my daily driver and therefore warrants a few "days at the spa." The first was the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, ect. My local mechanic is a great guy and quoted about $950 for the job but it ended up under $900...and he even swapped all drive belts while at it! Next comes new feet. I've been reading up on all the tire talk here...and man is there some good discussions. Haven't made my pick yet, but snow performance is a high priority. Other than those big ticket items, I need to fix the passenger side door lock (manual) and replace a couple blow speakers. I'm also going to figure out a rear cargo area cover. Expect more posting!
  5. Thanks! Time to hit the junkyard!
  6. Thanks MY1PATH! I just sent you a message.
  7. Hey all! Has anyone used the kit described in this post to put a junkyard carrier on a Pathfinder that didn't have one from the factory? http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?showto...re+tire+carrier How does it make up for my Pathy not have the "underskin support?" Thanks! ID95PATH
  8. Wow! Will this work on my 95 without factory rear rack? If so, you guys just saved me lots of time and money because that's cheaper than buying the steel need for my planned custom job. And then there's the calling in favors for help and doing the work! Is there anything I need to check before ordering this? Thanks!
  9. Yeah, I tried that. The end isn't capped, but the rear frame crossbar (round) goes right through and is welded. Basically blocks it off.
  10. Hey Everyone. I'm installing a receiver on my 95 Pathfinder and ran into a problem maybe someone can give me some advice on. I ordered the receiver from J.C. Whitney and it's made by Curt Manufacturing. I'm overall pleased with the unit with two exceptions. 1.) It is advertised as "No Drilling Required" and on the instruction sheet is also says "NO DRILLING REQ." About 4 inches from that text on the same page are the words "Using the hitch as a template drill out the front mounting hole to 17/32" (Personally, I find this more humorous than annoying) 2.) Here is my problem. The instructions say "Fishwire a carriage bolt and spacer through the access slot located on the inside of the frame rail near the gas tank and out the front mounting hole location." My problem is there is no access slot anywhere big enough for the bolt (much less the spacer). Not on the inside, outside, top, or bottom. Not near the gas tank, not not-so-near the gas tank. Nowhere. So I guess I need to make one and my plan is to drill a hole and then file it out just big enough for the bolt and spacer. The spacer is required to keep the bolt from turning. My question is would it better on the bottom or side? I suppose the top is possible but not the easiest. Maybe now would be a good time to have some strategically placed frame rot! Thanks!
  11. Great advice! One note: Do not take a handgun into Canada. Look it up yourself, but I'm pretty sure there is no legal way of doing so. A long gun (rifle or shotgun) can declared at the border and carried through. I would recommend a 12 gauge shotgun that can be cased in the back with a box of ammo next to it. At night bring it into the motel room and every state in the Union recognizes your right to defend yourself in your rented-by-the-night-castle. Except DC, which doesn't seem to be part of the Union.
  12. Anyone have a Surco rack? They look pretty good for the $, though so does the Sportrack.
  13. Actually I haven't decided yet. Like I said, my Pathy came with Thule square bar and mounts but they were not on. I didn't think it was a big deal until I saw that that alone is over $250. So I ordered locks and new handles (which were missing). Once I get the bars on, I'll get a basket. I'm glad I held off because I was leaning toward one at Cabelas for $160 here: Cabela's rack Now I see there is a dealer in my small town for SPORTRACK, so I'll check that out. It looks like it may be a better rack for less money....Thanks!!!!
  14. Hi All. My 95 Pathfinder has the spare tire mounted in the cargo area and I plan to build a custom rear bumper with carrier sometime soon. My thought for a temporary solution was to throw it on a roof rack. It came with Thule cross-bars so I need a basket-type rack. I like the Thule MOAB, but not the $350 price tag. Has anybody found a "better value" rack that can go on my Thule square bars? Thanks,
  15. Thanks everyone! I helped dig it out of a snowbank and took a look today. The only two things I saw were a dent in the rear bumper and the center console is cracked! It fired right up and I heard no rattles. Drove it around in and out of the snow. 4hi and low work fine, the heater blows hot and the ac blows cold. It's got good tires and I couldn't see any frame rot. We drove it over to a import-only mechanic's place that I trust and left it there so he can give it a look-see for me. If he gives it the green light I'm in business! The guy is even throwing in a Thule roof rack w/ ski and bike attachments, plus a set of good (i.e. not cable) snow chains. I've already learned lots here. Like the fact that getting a swing-away spare tire mount from a junkyard won't work...but I see someone built a heavy duty bumper mount version...excellent! Don't know if the timing belt has been done, so at 131k miles it might need that. I'll look through the maintenance docs and see. Even so, not bad for $2000. Oh, I'm in Moscow. A good hour and a half from Cabela's (though I haven't been.) Later!
  16. I'm a big Nissan fan who just sold his 78 Chevy 4X4 and is planning on buy a buddy's 95 SE Pathfinder. Other than frame rot, anything in particular I should look at before buying? I can get it for $2k w/ approx. 130k miles, 5-spd, and it was his wife's towncar. It won't become a dedicated off-roader but will need to be capable of hitting the Idaho mountains in all my pursuits. In my life I've owned an 82 2WD Nissan truck, an 84 Sentra, and a 2000 Frontier 4X4. Hope to learn lots here!
