  1. So, we have here a '94 Pathfinder, for sale for $3K (negotiable). 5spd, 4x4, red. Odometer died in 2002 with 64K on it, current mileage unknown. Known issues: - exhaust manifold is leaking (the usual) - EGR is not working (no vacuum signal to valve) - both CV boot broken - front brakes are nearly worn down - needs new oil/coolant/clutch/brake fluid - needs alignment - needs timing belt - oil leak - cam and/or valve cover seals (slow leak) - front right parking light broken - needs new air filter I'm personally not buying...was just curious if anyone known common prices to get these repaired. I would also be happy to point you to the seller if you are yourself interested in the truck.
  2. And the right answer was - cam seals. RMS was indeed ok. I decided not to buy the truck due to a multitude of other issues (manifold studs, EGR, unknown mileage, just to name a few) If people want to play "write an estimate" I can post a full list of issues
  3. Oh yeah, CV boots are gone for sure, both are ripped, that was clear. I agree about the coolant (should smell), just the comment earlier about seeing a drop coming off the skid that got me thinking..
  4. Ok, sounds that the consensus it, it likely is leaking oil, and possibly coolant. I'm going to take another look at it tomorrow, and also will get it inspected. From discussion so far, it seems like it can leak from one or more of: - oil pressure sender - valve cover seals - RMS RMS sounds like a lot of work ($600+), oil pressure sender is a fairly easy fix (am i correct?), what about valve cover seals (complexity/cost, anyone know?)
  5. All right, thanks all for advice. I'm taking the truck in to get inspected on Friday, since there it enough doubt here that the oil leak is serious Will also take a closer look myself at the RMS, valve covers, and water pump (which I have yet to look up the location of)
  6. It's manual, so no worries about auto tranny How much labor is there for RMS work - i.e. what would a shop charge? Also, how much does a cluster + replacement go for? I think I'll end up taking it in to get inspected, and if inspection goes through, will buy it.
  7. CVs are still fine, but the boots are dried and cracked open. The sale price is quite low, so I'm factoring in the axle replacement into the deal. I'm guessing you guys can't tell from my crappy pics whether it's RMS or not - but, how much would it cost to replace one?
  8. Hi all Went to see a truck for sale today. Seems in good condition, only a few things broken - CV boots - Speedo doesn't work - mileage estimated to be about 100K - Liftgate struts are shot However, noticed a fair amount of oil stains on the bottom of the engine, and a little bit on the rear diff. Checked the oil level, looks good, previous owner says never had to add oil. What do you guys think? Many pics here 94 Red Pathy Please advice, soon if possible, since I need to make a buying decision. Thanks!
  9. Thanks guys for tips. I heard from some sources that newer models (94-95) had stronger studs - but it sounds like it was still a problem? Also, are the broken studs visually identifiable, or is there another standard way to diagnose? (yes, I have tried searching for pics, but unsuccessfully). Understood about the hubs, and will definitely inspect any frames closely. Any thoughts on the oil on the diffs? Cheers.
  10. Hi all I'm new here Don't have a Pathy yet, but looking for one. Looking for a 94 or 95, with the purpose of converting the back into a camper - building an elevated platform at about window level to use as a bed, and space under it for storage. (rear seats will be taken out). But, mostly just looking for advice on what things to look out for when looking over one for sale. I understand car mechanics reasonably well, just haven't dealt with Pathfinders specifically. I'm looking for one with V6, 4x4, and 5speed. Price is not really an object, within reason. I'm aiming for something close to 100K miles. (I specifically do not want a newer one, I like the blunt nose Live in California, so rust is probably not a big issue. So, would appreciate any tips of the collective wisdom here: what are the common problem, and how to look for them. Also while I'm at it, two specific questions - is it normal to have some oil stains on the bottom of the front/rear diffs? - (noob question warning) front hubs - lock automatically once truck is put in 4WD Hi or Lo; need to be reversed to unlock, can be driven in 2H without unlocking, but better for transmission to unlock. Correct? Cheers!
