EL-74 of the '97 manual shows the dash lights running off a 10A fuse labelled 61 on the diagram, which runs to what I'm guessing is the headlight switch. I assume the + feed for the dash lights tees off of the circuit for the tail light/corner light/parking lights (first click on the headlight stalk). If that fuse is blown, I'd expect the headlights and corner lights to be out, too.

If you grounded the radio to the pink/black stripe wire for the dash lights, you probably overloaded the dimmer switch and fried it. Unplug the dimmer. It should have three wires in its plug. Pink with a green stripe is the same switched + that goes to the dash lights and corner lights, pink with a black stripe is the dash light ground (controlled by the dimmer), and black is body ground. With the parking lights on, you should have 12v between pink/green and black, and if you jumper between black and pink/black, the dash lights should come on at full brightness. (Be careful not to short pink/green to black while you're messing with the plug.) If this all checks out, but the lights don't work with the dimmer plugged in, replace the dimmer switch.

When the dimmer broke in my '93, I took it apart, desoldered the plug from the circuit board, soldered the two ground pins together, and plugged the resulting jumper plug back into the harness so I'd have dash lights until the replacement dimmer came in.

Where did you buy the dimmer from?

  2. Exactly what the title reads. I removed the distributor to get to the valve cover gasket and did not mark anything. I put the whole thing back together, crank it, and its misfiring. Do a little research and ends up I should've marked it when removing. Any tips or tricks that could help a young guy out?

From what im reading, I have to get the engine top dead center and point the rotor towards the 1st wire?

Yeah, they won't work at all if the hazard switch is borked. The plastic does get fragile. I see a few WD21 hazard switches on eBay for $30 used. Try searching D21 if WD21 doesn't pull much up. There are a few styles, though, so make sure you get the rocker version for the square dash rather than the round-dash push switch or the weird early pickup one.

Would the Wd21 fit my 91? they look different from the one original in my car, I don't care how it looks just if it works.

If the hazards don't work either, you can rule out the headlight switch.

+1 on the turn signals going through the hazard switch. I worked on a clapped-out VW a while back where the turn signals didn't work unless the hazard switch was in just the right spot.

Fuses were a good place to start, but brake and turn are fused individually, so both would have to be bad. This is not impossible, but assuming both issues started at once, you probably have one fault causing both. The flasher unit is shared, so that would've been my next check.

I've got the '90 service manual up and there's a diagram of the hazards and turn signals on EL-48. You can download this free from cardiagn.com. I can suggest some things to check, but you will need a test light or a voltmeter, and a piece of thin wire you can wrap around one lead to get down into electrical plugs for testing.

To be clear: are the turn signal lights on the dash coming on but not flashing, or are they not coming on at all?

they are not coming in at all.

Good call on the online manuals, thought those were gone for good.  You indicated that you checked the relay, etc., but I would start with fuses, relay again, and test this combo switch under the dash.

I tried this out, wasn't it. I'm thinking SlartiBartFast is onto something because right when they went out my hazard switch also broke. As in, i took it out and the plastic piece broke. Maybe when the hazard switch breaks, the turn signals don't work either? trying to find another switch that would fit because all OEM switches are 60-70 dollars.

  6. Turn signals are out on my 91 pathy.

The arrows on the dash don't flash, and same when I try my hazards. When I turn on my headlights the same lights in the front still come on. Checked the fuses, don't seem to be the issue. Also changed the flasher relay, wasn't it either. The turn signal switch still allows me to turn on the headlights. What could the issue be? (I am a total beginner when it comes to electrical.)

  8. I bought it close to a month ago and was in terrible shape, as it has been sitting for close to 10 years is what the previous owner said.

Only 87k miles on her, but minor surface rust and the paint is oxidized and has some water stains.

I changed all the fluids, except for the power steering, as I heard it takes dexron ATF and not Power steering fluid.

Changed the front windshield pump and cleaned the air filter as well.

All the bushings on the front and back end look shot, so will definitely have to change them, but i want to add a 2" or 3" lift kit, but im not sure where to start as i've never got into lifting a car (if anyone can give some budget options ill be more than happy).

Also the dash lights and tail lights come on, but the brake lights work, so im assuming its the dimmer switch? Wondering if you had the same problem as it seems somewhat common and what your solution would be.

Need to weld another exhaust tip or get another exhaust as it looks like it is about to fall off, so ill see what im going to do about that.

TIming belt, water pump, and thermostat was also changed.

Is there anything i need to look at in specific or look into replacing at the 90k mile range?
