  1. Thanks so much for the input. Going to go ahead and change filter and fluid. Thats something I can do myself. I'll also try bypassing the cooler for a test. Not a bad idea since I replaced the radiator a few years ago. Fluid looks good but will see whats in the pan when I pull it. I decided if it is shot that I can pull the tranny myself and save some $ there. Ill keep an eye out for the Xterra tranny as well. I'll keep yall' posted. Again, thanks for the info.. This has been a very helpful forum.
  2. One part of a vehicle I never touch but might give it a try. I'll try to be brief. Started noticing that when cold 'D' did not engage but if put in second for a few hundred feet it coul be shifted into drive and would be fine as long as it was warm. Sunday it began to shift in and out of overdrive (power) with out me pushing the button. I could feel a slip when in overdrive. Limped it home in second. Only a mile on a 20 mph road. The trans. was rebuilt in 2006 and only has about 30,000 miles on it. If a total rebuild is needed it could likely be nearing $2000. which I can absorb. But, this not being my primary truck do I want to drop that kind of money on a truck worth only 2500. to 3500.? Is it worth chaning fluid and filter or does this sound more severe than that. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
  3. I'll try to be brief. Went to start 89' pathy last week and batt. was dead. No big deal. Jumped it and it fired right up. Idled very smooth while I let it warm up. Then it 'hitched' just for a second then went back to running smooth. Did this a few times and when I came back a min. later it had died. tried to start but the batt. was dead again(should have charged up by then). Jumped it again and it died again a min. later. The batt. is just over 2 years old and the alternator is about a year old and is charging as it should according to gauge. I'm supposing the batt. could be bad and easy enough to replace but could a dead batt. cause the motor to intermittently want to die? Another thing is a while back I was walking by it and heard something buzzing like when the key is first put into ignition position but it was off and the key was not even in. This has happened more than once. Been running great till now.

  5. Well I wish Id read this before I pulled my T-stat this morning. Did exactly that but it took an hour to figure it out.
  6. Im not much of a mechanic (although Im getting alot of experience). Just had a new exhaust installed on my 89 Pathfinder (cat and all). I had removed the AIV valve not long before and a previous owner had removed the AIV air cleaner. The AIV was decentegrated. When they test ran it the cat got real hot and they were concerned it would burn up. Went to San Marcos Nissan and ordered a new AIV (also called a PAIR valve), air cleaner box, hoses and solenoid. I dont have emissions testing in my county yet but could pass now. It made a noticable difference. Idles lower and seems to run a tad more smoothly. Just for what its worth.
  7. 89' Pathfinder needs a new AIV or I need to get rid of it. Ive searched everywhere but the dealer for a replacement and have had no luck. I did read somewhere that it can be removed with out affecting performance. If I remove it do I just cap both both hoses or connect them. I worry about not having the reed valves between the cat. convert. and the block. Don't have emission testing in my county (yet) so I have the option to remove it but wondering if it would be best to replace it. Anybody run into this before?
  8. I think you hit the nail on the head. Discount had them in stock and said they always do. Picked them up Sat.. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the others Friday. While it's up on blocks I can go over every thing real good. Thanks, John
  9. Hello!, Been a while since I've been on the forum. Got a question. I need to replace the tires on my 89' Pathfinder. They are what is described in the title. My issue is that at the moment I only need 2 (nor can I afford 4 w/out a divorce). Someone at a tire place said that BF Goodrich is discontinuing the 32's and going to a 31 and a 33. So, I'm concerned that if I get 2 now and go back in 6 months for the next 2 it's possible I can't find them? (or was this guy blowing smoke up my azz?) Thanks and I'll get some pics up when I'm done with my mods.. John
  10. Wow! Long read but helpful. Already bought a new cap and thermostat for my 89' and will install tomorrow. Worst case I'd rather change the radiator than the pump. Thanks for the info..
  11. Name of my boat. Always in the middle of some sort of repair or upgrade.(much like a certain 4wd I own) Rode hard and put away wet. Been using it for years. Just stuck.
  12. Searched the forums and read others posts about this but would like your opinions on what to do. The AIV tube connector by the cat. conv. is missing. I have a tube that can replace it but the reed valves in the AIV case are not functioning anyway. I do not want to leave them open but not sure whether I should cap each end or use the connector even though there is no check valve. BTW-No emission checks in my county. Your thoughts Hobson?
  13. Thanks for the warm reception. I've been driving a longbed, extended cab, Ford F150 with a tow package and a full length, square iron pipe rack, loaded down with tools. My Pathfinder is damn sure a different animal to drive! I'm really digging it........... I'll get some pics. up soon.
  14. Hello everyone. Just bought an 89' Pathfinder from a friend and am loving it. Needs a little TLC and some minimal body work but other than that it's a jewel. Basically I'm looking to restore and add kayak racks to it. That's pretty much it. Every truck I've had for the past 10 years has been a combo. of work and play which wears me out(not to mention the vehicles). I look forward to sharing info. and experience with all. Thanks for having me aboard.
