Precise1...plasti dip, ill look into it. I didnt think about expanding foam on my cut off in back. That would workout pretty good. Ill try to be through on the write up. One more question. Now the cross bars....If i decide to run the. Spare up top.(31" now 32" in future. Should I rest it on the bars and strap it down or should i take the mount off back and figure out a way to bolt to roof. As you can see, i try to everything myself to cut cost and focus more of the money on the suspension.

Good idea!! Then my sunroof can at least open and possible tilt. I will be putting this up next weekend. That's what I'm getting at, but if you trimmed the front to level on the roof, then cut an inch or so off the top of the basket, mounting it from the sides, you will be able to run the modified basket & not have to build spacers
-
Yes i do want to keep the basket. If there wasnt a basket i would of pulled the pathfinder one instead of this xterra one. I just wanted something different. Its more about function first and form second....and saving money where i can.(i dont have enough of it..lmao!) This project will cost me less than $75. The basket will be used for wet clothes and towels from tubing with the fam ily. In snow or river.so the roof of a WD21 is longer than the R50?
I know you want to keep the basket but I think if I was doing this I would lose the basket and shorten the front tubes so the rear one will fit on the roof, but it's your truck.

Im asumming you mean to pull the basket up hinced the cutting of the top mounts. If you notice the side shot the basket it is sitting flush on the sunroof. If you also notice that back how big the spacer is will be in back. Id have to trim alot of front piping to level it out. I dont mind the spacers. Im thinking whats. Bothering me is at the end with a open back. Of rack. Trying to figure out how to close it off.

I like it. Once its dialed in Ill give it a fresh coat of black paint. I will definitely do a detailed write up on this.Well that looks pretty good. How do you like it's fit?

Okay here how its sits. Thoughts? I loose my ability of my sunroof unless i mount washers on the basket to raise it a few.
-
Exactly...Too long. The front mount hangs over off of the front curve by 3-4"

Im putting the rack together right now for visual. Hang on!

Gotcha!! The middle mount will become the rear mounts. It will face inside. Id figured, once the pipe was cut i could just plug the with a rubber tip.You can turn the middle mount so it sits inward, you would need to drill anew hole and use a rivnut to mount the middle mount. I reversed the middle mounts when I installed the rack on my former 94 pathfinder. I also used riv nuts to mount it to the roof.

Welcome!!! Nice color. Just like mine!

Check it out. I like the idea of putting above rain gutter. I understand the cutting the front. But im trying to keep basket.Ok, I took a look but since I already have a roof rack, I couldn't position it freely. This is it just inboard of the rain gutter and lined up flush with the back.
This is the farthest back the front mount can go before it interferes with the sunroof, about 1" overhang with the rear mount.
Two ways I can see to do this is to shorten it about 1-2" by trimming down the front tube, making a plastic riser for the middle legs and a wedge for the front. It wouldn't be much, maybe 1/2" thick.
The other way I couldn't test is what if you just straddled the rain gutter? If you shortened the rack (maybe 4" estimate, via trimming the front legs) enough for the middle feet to touch the roof, you would be outboard of the sunroof and be able to move it back enough that the front foot sits flat without the rear hanging over the edge. If you are mounting from the top using rivnuts or jacknuts or whatever, it shouldn't make a difference.
Can you position yours outboard of the sunroof and back like that and take a picture?

Cutting here is where i might try with a spacer. Ill measure and re-measure first.

Its a cheap project if i can pull it off.Well if it does not work out, but the rack is still in useable condition for a WD21 (87-95) install, you may be able to make that $40 selling to someone on here... preferably local of course. All depends on what and how you trim though.

Made my own basic medical supply bag for my rig.
Used military gas mask bag $5 garage sale.
Just in case family med pak $10
Miscellaneous $5
Now to figure out where to mount this thing.

Man Ive looked all over. Ive been brainstorming all day trying to figure this out. Im trying to avoid cutting the front. Cutting the back and mounting the middle supports on rear is all i came up with. With some type of spacer on the new rear mount to level it out. I only paid $40 bucks for it. So its no huge loss if i mess up.

Ill take a look. Thanks

I found this online. He explained it better than i could... Hope this helps. "In the front of the engine bottom in front of the oil pan but behind the lower pulley hormanic balancer . Its a magnatic and sences the rotation of the crankshaft usely easy to replace you may need to remove some splash pans from the under carrage to get to it but it makes a big differance in how the vehicle runs check for codes first and make sure this is the problem if it is there will be a code for it P0335 -P0349 depending on whats wrong with it but it wil be in that range".

Thanks for the help. Couldnt i cut the back and move the center mounts to the back. To allow for the use of faring and basket. I will be pulling the liner for sure and using lock washers.

Im attempting to mount a xterra rack on my 96. Any suggestions on what type bolts to put through roof to secure. Ill loose my ability to tilt my sunroof unless i move the basket to the rear. Rather this works or not ill will try this. Thanks for you help!

Thanks for the reply. Is level 3 pushing it? Im sooooo ready to hit a trail or 2 this summer.
-
I checked my budget and its only gonna allow me to get :
Struts/Shocks
Strut Spacers
Oem bearing and mounts
Alignment kit
Will I be okay with stock springs(only have 10k miles on them) for level 1 and level 2 trails. ?
-
Sounds like fun. I should have shocks and springs put on by June!I see a trail ride in order for summer. Mine has over 270k and I don't think particularly careful maintenance so you'll probably make it just fine.
-
Man that sucks...i wanted to be 10k member...dammit!!
-
Thanks maakaa!!! Im in the littleton area. Im hoping 2 get 250k out of it. The wifey said no more projects til I hit that mark. I was looking for a fox body to play with but i guess i can wait.<br />

I know. Sounds crazy. I thought the bigger tire, the more stress on factory arm bar mounts. Thanks for all your help.
