I've never found a service manual for the Terrano. But one of the guys (pretty sure it was Ekim Naelcm) on the FB page made an R50 auto trans work in his Terrano, and IIRC all it took was swapping over the bellhousing and having a torque converter made, which means it's (at least a variant of) the same RE4R01A that's in the North America-spec gas-engine trucks.

The '95 US manual specs 8.5 liters (9 US quarts) for the 4WD, 7.9 (8-3/8) for the 2WD. It calls for "Genuine Nissan ATF" or Dexron II. The R50 (which has an upgraded variant of the same slushbox) service manuals spec Nissan Matic D, so I assume that's what "Genuine Nissan ATF" means. I used bottom-shelf generic dex-merc in mine and it didn't seem to mind.

I flushed mine by putting the cooler lines in a bucket, running the engine until it stopped pumping brown fluid into the bucket, adding fresh fluid through the dipstick tube, and repeating that process until the fluid coming out was recognizable as the fluid I was putting in. Dropping the pan looked like a PITA, and I'd been told that the filter is more of a screen than a filter anyway, so I didn't bother with it. I have since seen a picture of a trans filter full of what looked like clutch material--not sure what else was wrong with that transmission, or how common that is. Might be worth checking the filter (and wiping the sludge out of the pan) for peace of mind if nothing else.

Be careful filling the transmission. The level changes a lot as it warms up, and you're supposed to check with it warm. I thought I had it close, warmed it up, and had to drain about a quart to get it back down to the mark.

Perfect thanks so much for the info, I will give this method a try!

Maybe I should measure how much actually comes out and try to refill the same amount.

Think I won't bother with the filter either then.

Did you notice any difference in trans performance?

My diesel knowledge is (still!) similarly limited, but I would add checking the water separator if you haven't. Pull a fuel sample while you're at it and look for algae or other goo. Might be worth blocking the EGR to see if that helps--if it's easy to get to, it's an easy thing to rule out.

I would not be surprised if the rebuilt pump needed some timing or other adjustment. I have not studied it but do have a copy of the TD27 engine service manual on Dropbox, if that helps (I don't remember where I found it or I'd link you there instead). The place that rebuilt the pump might have some ideas, too.

And yeah, get some fresh fuel in there before you try too hard to dial it in.

Yeah I think I may need to replace the main filter, I replaced it 9 years ago and it has sat so its probably not very nice in there lol.

Thanks for the link! will definitely be helpful. I definitely may need to get the timing checked on this, not sure where to go here in Canada.

Worst case I will follow the timing process on the FSM you linked and yes its all new fuel now.

How old is the fuel? Regardless of Gas or Diesel it does go bad after a period of time. After 9 years I would not want to have old fuel going through the lines.

As for Diesel in general I'm not too knowledgeable on what basic stuff to check.

fuel should be all new now, I even ran some diesel injector cleaner through a full tank.

  4. Hey guys after 9 years of the truck sitting, I got the injection pump rebuilt and no more air getting into the fuel system! The truck is drivable and starts right up.

The issue I'm having now is low power, I changed the oil/filter and air filter, that helped a good amount but the truck still struggles to get to and maintain 100km/h, it will lose speed going up any incline as well.

Should I look at blocking the EGR? Any other things I can try?

" I have to keep pumping the diesel pump until the engine is warm"
I presume you mean primer pump on top of fuel filter?
If so you've probably got a leaking fuelpump.
Go get you local diesel specialist to check it out, of if you want to DIY do some searching on how to test it out

When you say fuel pump are you talking about the primer pump? and also is it normal for the diesel to return back from the primer pump through the fuel line to the tank when you turn off the truck or should it just sit in the fuel lines??

  6. Hey, I have a 93 TD27 RHD and when I start up the truck, I have to keep pumping the diesel pump until the engine is warm (even in the summer, but I have to pump less), If I do not pump it the engine the idle jumps around then the truck stalls. I have tried changing the whole diesal filter unit (including the hand pump) and the problem persists. Once the engine is warm It usually runs fine and doesn't stall. I heard maybe it could be the glow plugs? so I tried the multimeter test (set to 200) and all the plugs said 1.2, is this good or bad?. Anyone know what the problem is?

    Thanks
