  1. Car started making strange noises yesterday, found out that two exhaust hangers had broken and the pipes were hitting the cross member. Both bolts on the frame to one hanger snapped & the replacement I had gotten from the store was the wrong one anyway. Found an old universal hangar and now it's all set. I also wiped off the rear end to find I have an LSD. Was pretty good.

  2. I started with my grandfather's 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX (v6) died in an accident when I was in high school.

Then no car for a while, had a 2000 Ford Taurus wagon. Could fit a 55' flatscreen in the back with the seats down!

Then got an 85 Monte Carlo from a junkyard. Still have it, need to fix it. Sanded the roof down to bare metal and the tarp over it blew off so it's getting rusty.

Then a 99 Dodge Intrepid, which a woman totaled after flooring it through a rotary because she didn't want to yield

    Now the pathfinder!

  3. Turn the fan to off it shuts it off.

Yeah, that was a dumb question! Thank you.

For what it's worth, the manual controls look like this:

It's dead simple to use and it works just fine. (Ignore the torn apart dash, long story.)

Does sound like you're just feeling air that's blowing in from outside. If you set it to recirc it shouldn't do that. Personally I don't mind it, it's like having a window open but without the noise. The fan/AC/etc aren't being powered, though you can still get heat (the heater uses the hot coolant from the engine, so it's just a matter of which baffles are open). If you turn the slider to the cold end, maybe it'll shut the baffles?

I'm not sure how much of a project you'd be in for switching for manual controls. I would assume that they both attach to the same things, and the only difference would be an unused plug for an air temperature sensor. Assumptions like this usually leave me swearing at Nissan for changing small things that didn't need changing (and marveling at the number of sharp things under the dash) so take this with a couple bags of salt.

@Trogdor, that's funny, the only one I've ever seen was in a 93. Maybe they didn't sell well and Nissan gave up on them?

Thank you for the picture. For some reason I had a lot of trouble understanding the difference but I think I'm better off just leaving everything the way it is. I'll set mine to recirculate if it starts to bother me.

Really appreciate all the help everyone.

  4. Would it be a big project to swap in the manual controls? I'll get used to it, but it would be nice to have it on only when I want it on. I'm wondering if it's more than plugging a manual unit if I could find one in the junkyard. Auto controls are really weird to me!

  5. that is not the manual hvac controls.

If you press the defrost button, far right, does the air still come out at the floor??

I didn't feel anything with defrost on.

Yeah, that's the auto. Is this while the truck's moving or while it's parked? Unless the recirc is on with mine it'll blow a little air when I'm driving, not because the fan motor's spinning but just because air's getting rammed into the intakes.

I doubt it hurts your MPG too much, though if it's running the AC compressor it's not helping it any.

It's while it's moving, not in park. You are right I think that it's probably air in the intake cause I really noticed it last night coming home on the highway.

The auto for the WD21 are sort of a rare thing, I've seen them in 93's more than any other year. I'm with everyone on it blowing a little at all times, but I'm not familiar enough with that to know it works like the manual version.

Okay, thank you. I never realized it had automatic controls.

As long as your AC compressor is not cycling on and off (keep it off the defrost and defrost/foot mode) it will not affect MPG.

That is very good to know. I don't think I've heard the a/c compressor coming on, I leave the bar in the middle on 75. I never run into the style of buttons on these and I've noticed you kinda have to press two of the buttons together to make one of them pop off so that no air mode is on. I know that isn't the clearest description but should I be driving with the fan in the off position and the blower set to anything but defrost ? Thanks again everyone I really appreciate the help. Trying to get these little things all sorted out.

  6. Hey everyone, I did try searching for this issue so if this is something I missed I'm very sorry.

Anyway, I have a 93' Pathfinder and I've noticed that it tends to always blow air on my feet if I don't have anything selected on the control unit. The fan speed is set to off, but I can feel air and I don't think it's truly turning off. I also found that if I play with the temperature slider it'll get hot or cold, leading me to be concerned that something is wrong. I made sure that when it happens none of the fan buttons are lit. I've been told sometimes older cars never really shut off the climate controls so maybe someone can set me straight on this. Thank you!

  7. Rust isn't a big deal. I suspect that Nissan is more at fault since there frames have those awesome none draining drain holes.

    Welcome and all.

There are enough okay parts that I'm sure it can be saved. The title was me joking I'm not very funny!

Sounds like the valves in the trans might be gummed up. I've heard that pouring some Seafoam Trans-Tune in there helps unstick them. Getting the trans working better and giving the engine a basic tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, vac lines) should help get some gas mileage back but don't expect much more than 18mpg average.

Holy frame of the Titanic, though! Good luck with that.

I can grab a can of that and hopefully that'll fix it without anything expensive being wrong. I think the guy I bought it from did a tune up but it wouldn't hurt to go over it again. It was a small garage place so they gave it a once over to make it sellable. 18 mpg would be fine with me, if I can get it there I'll be very happy. Thank you!

Rust or not, the body and interior look fantastic. Welcome to NPORA!

Thank you! The rust can be dealt with, I'm really happy the dashboard isn't cracked. It didn't come out in the picture but the carpet has lots and lots of little stains, the floormats are original and kinda filthy. I have carpet cleaner and hit it once so far. Headliner is stained too! Truck doesn't smell bad inside though, I might try one of those rug doctor machines if it really starts to bug me.

  8. Ok, before you go to far, look into getting the frame/pannels fixed, and go to the Garage section, there is a pinned thread to download a FSM (1994 is first year, use that for most things). That will allow you to diagnose the AT, after checking the fluid and making sure there is flow through the cooler lines. Either of these can be show stoppers so don't waste time on the small stuff yet. The inside and most of the out looks great though so hopefully it is salvagable.

I just don't get it why people let them rust away like that.

    B

Thank you very much for your advice. Transmission is the first thing I'm going to look at. I peeked at the fluid and it does have enough, but I should double check and then check those lines. Gunna stay positive and hope it's a minor issue. Then I can focus on the frame. It was kinda dirty inside, I don't think I want to know what the previous owner was up too.

  9. Craigslist link is expired (obviously because you bought it!) but this is why I was asking

Lots of great info here, quite a few live in the Salt/Rust belt and in Canada so we are familiar with rust. I live in Cali but my 94 spent the first years of its life in Chicago so its got issues as well.

Haha, that is absolutely the truck I bought. Thank you for that, I need to go over there and show them! There is some great info here, I'm really glad I found this site. I'll be really glad when I can get this thing running right! I'm hoping to make it last.
  10. Hey everyone, I am now an owner of a 1993 Pathfinder SE. I wish I had seen seen this website before I bought at because I'm dealing with a lot of the problems found in the FAQ. It's extremely rusty underneath and the frame behind the rear axle is nearly non existent! I like the truck though and I'm going to jump in & start fixing things.

    My priorities so far include:

    Fixing the rusty frame

Radio doesn't work, so I'll be installing a new one

Transmission gets stuck inbetween 1st & 2nd (it's an auto) not sure if it's bad or there's something I can do

It loves gas, maybe do something to gain a couple MPG's if I could

Fix the rusted out rocker panel

For me it's a temporary vehicle but I'm really starting to get attached to it!
