So I was in the market for an off-road rig for the mountains and forest service roads. I found a 1994 Pathfinder XE; auto with 170K in decent shape. So far, with the help of NPORA wisdom, I've done the timing belt, tensioner, bypass hose (@#!!#), belts, fluids, added a stacked plate tranny cooler, done the JGC lift and replaced all four shocks (pics soon). In the course of all this, I discovered a couple new options for shocks, and the potential for more. I used the 1996 F150 shocks for the rear (NAPA's Gas Grande Fleet shocks, recommended as apparently a lot of the oil companies use them for oilfield trucks). However, I could not find heavy-duty equivalent front shocks. I did look at the Bronco II shocks, as suggested, but discovered a better way. The Monroe shock guide (PDF online) has measurements for hundreds of shocks. I looked up the Gas Magnum ones in the correct length, and found several options. Most are from Ford vans. This way I was able to have NAPA cross over the part number to their shocks, in a HD application. It did take a little grinding on the bushings, but less work than the rears (and they were pretty easy too). Trying them today, will report back later. But there are definitely more options out there!
