  1. Hmm, problem with getting anything off eBay is getting it into the country without paying the usual "courtesy tax" to the customs officers The main nissan maintenance location here stocks stock (heh) carbs but they run at about $400, which is... about the same price as I'd pay for anything off eBay plus said courtesy tax. Might just get that...
  2. I need a new carb... Unfortunately I don't think these are made anymore
  3. So my Z24 still has the factory standard carburator on it, and while I know where the idle adjust screw is, I can't figure out where to regulate fuel flow. As far as I can tell the engine runs very rich on account of a hideous gasoline smell coming from the exhaust, and when the engine is running and I look down into the carb I can see drops of gas fall out the little fuel pipes, which makes me think it's close to drowning itself. Then again, not a mechanic so... you know Anyway, I took some pics. (turns out they're rather blurry, sorry... it was a bit dark and my phone doesn't take very good pics). Below pic taken from front of the engine, the little round thing in the top right is best described as a little plunger, when the AC kicks in it extends and pushes open the throttle a little bit. Aaaand it's the only useable picture. Damn. Hope someone can give me a hint
  4. You're the man! Probably a reason you end up with those emails is that the Z24 carburated engine is still in use in places like Indonesia and Mexico. My pathy (or Terrano as they're called here) is from 2002, I think they used the carbed Z24 up to 2003, after that they're all Z24i's. There's a ridiculous amount of them on the roads here too, the national Terrano club has over 400 members IIRC, with some members having multiple vehicles even.
  5. Well, part of the problem's been solved. Turns out one of the spark plug wires came loose, which is really odd considering it's the first time in 3 years, and the car hasn't actually moved from it's place since I last started it and it ran fine. I'm guessing it's been one of my cats, they have this habit of crawling on top of the engine to take a nap when it's raining. Did notice the wires are rather tight so probably going to hit the shop later today and get some new (longer) spark plug wires. The only remaining issue now is that the idle is pretty rough, already mucked about with that to raise it to 750rpm (which IIRC is the "factory default" for this engine), but it tends to dip to 600 regularly, more with the AC running. Guessing it's a vacuum leak since I can hear a rather distinct hissing noise with the hood open, but.. yeah. Anyway, it's drivable again so that solves that! Thanks for the tips at any rate, didn't need them this time but good to know for a next time. At this rate I may just turn into a backyard mechanic after all
  6. Yeah I ran into that search thing myself >.> I'm in a tropical climate; 35 degrees C and 90 to 100% humidity so that'll do the condensation trick I think. I'll take a look at the cap, if that's not it I'll toss the air cleaner out and take some carb pics. Hope I can get this fixed before new years, the timing on this breakdown is horrid
  7. Hi bushnut, it has no ODB2 sensors at all, it's just a plain old Z24 carburated engine with no bells or whistles beyond what i put in there myself >.> Do you know if there's any pics of the standard carb online anywhere with some reference arrows as to what screw does what? Been trying to find them but.. no joy.
  8. Hi everyone, Been a member for a while but haven't been active for a while, but I'm back. I bring with me a problem... I have a 2002 (yes, really) Pathfinder with Z24 carburated engine in it. You may find my earlier postings about it because honest to god, it's not a typo I've had a slew of engine problems over the past month, from a vacuum leak that stopped a little cylinder extending when the AC came on (so you'd drop right into stall territory), to a carburator that decided to not work right, to idle holding problems, right up to today when the engine started misfiring. If I don't go out much I tend to run the engine from cold to operating temperature on a weekly basis, and that's what I was doing today. My driveway is up a slight incline so generally after a week of sitting still it'll need a start or two before it'll run right. Today was no different, except when it was running there was a very light grey smoke coming out the exhaust, and fluid dripping out - I'm no mechanic but I'd say that's a sure sign of the engine running incredibly rich; that's when the misfiring started, idle revs started shaking up and down, and while it kept on going the vibrations were rather heavy. Taking it up to 1500rpm made the entire car shake and wobble, and there was distinct kind of loping idle sound going on. Sounded rather like a V8 but I'm guessing it's because one cylinder isn't firing. Now, that being said... I'm no mechanic, the nearest shop is over 5 miles away, and I'm in need of some "get this thing going for enough time to make it to said shop". I am, however, a computer geek so some sort of instructions coupled with a "go lookie here on them there internets" will sort me out too. (Please don't suggest getting a Haynes manual, I tried, but can't buy them here, nor can I get them shipped over.. unfortunately ).
  9. Yeah, looked it up on Google earlier When I was recording I got a bit optimistic on 75 so that's why you hear me state "google it!"
  10. So, here's mine... was already rolling since I just left a toll booth and kind of forgot to hit record. Sorry for the odd angle Also, it's kilometers per hour, not miles. I think I'm talking about it in the video, I topped out at 110km/h which actually is around 65-ish, before traffic got in my way And yes, it's a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder carburated Z24 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvM_UgP2JtU
  11. Hey now.. don't diss my poor Z24 It's actually not a bad engine, easy to work on, the only thing it lacks is 4 more cylinders
  12. I was considering posting mine but seeing as how things have gone into V6/V8 range, I doubt my little Z24 is going to make an impression Besides, wouldn't want to confuse the issue by posting a speedo in km/h
  13. Thought about it, but to get a pathy that I can strip for parts would run me about $9000 for the pathy alone, then there's the slight annoyance that I must get an export license even to just ship parts out of the country. Just the customs way of getting paid a little extra on the side, so in the end it'd mean that I'd spend a day stripping a part off, ship it, and make $5 off the deal. No time for that
  14. Well I asked her about it too, for the job the options were limited to either Florida or California, I've lived in Miami for a year and near Los Angeles for a year and a half, so for me that's a matter of "don't care either way". So she settled on Florida, given that it sees there's a somewhat larger Indonesian community around there than other states. Snow country is something I personally would do in a heartbeat (I'm Dutch so sub-zero temperatures and such don't bother me any), but I was told that that would be something that'd happen when pigs fly. Considering I'm nominally speaking a muslim, I can't kick a pig either to make it fly so that kinda fizzled Price wise I'm stunned, been looking at CL and some other websites and it's like, pathy paradise! I know I can sell the one I have here for around $9000, so I should be able to find me a cheapish 4WD V6 equipped one and have enough money left to throw an overhaul at it. Probably initially it won't get pimped out and will be the daily driver until my wife's gotten her license and I've gotten her some wheels, then the pathy will turn into daddy's toy
  15. I don't see many HiLuxes around here, but Navara's get the 3.something diesel, at least, until the end of the year, they're stopping that line of engines. I think I'll just stick to doing maintenance on my pathy, this move-to-US thing seems to be firming up so I think the money I can get off selling it will go towards getting one in the states.
  16. Well, the move, if it goes through, is at the end of 2012 So if you're still entertaining the idea of selling it by that time, who knows Also, I'll be in Florida... not my first choice but to make it a bit easier on the missus I figured moving somewhere with a similar climate is a start.
  17. Hmm, the donor vehicle is a problem. I guess I'll just wait until I've moved to the USA and but a 4WD there From the looks of it going to be a bunch cheaper too, most pathys run anywhere from $7000 to $10000 here.
  18. Hi folks, Been sort of lusting after a 4WD pathy but considering that down this way cars tend to get driven until they fall to pieces, finding one has been a problem (that and everyone loves their pathys so actually finding a 4WD for sale that isn't a rusting heap of junk is rare, and prices reflect this). I did some poking under the body of my pathy, and noticed that contrary to what people have been telling me, all the bolt holes and other mounting points for a transfer case are there, and judging from the look of the floor pan over the tranny, a little dremel action will cut out the slot for the transfer case gear shift. Now obviously the question that's been on my mind; would it be worth finding a transfer case that bolts up, and converting to 4WD? I'm not uh, very mechanically inclined, so any custom-fab jobs would have to be farmed out to whatever local guy I can find, with the caveat I need to have drawings for him to work off, otherwise I'm going to get something that's close but no potato. So yeah, just wondering if it's possible, and if it is, whether it's actually worth the trouble of doing it. I'm looking at a potential move to the USA at the end of 2012, so if that goes through the pathy here gets sold, and I'm getting another one when I get to the USA, but roads around my area have gotten to the point where any sort of rain turns it into a major mud fest, and 2WD's have a grand old pain in the ass finding traction to get through. (Although sitting in 2nd gear @ 4000 rpm and just powersliding the crap out of everything works)
  19. Score. That'd be it; I suspected this already since today I actually ran the car for a while with the AC off (since it was frakkin cold outside, for some wacky reason) and noticed the noise ain't there. Turned the AC on, get the by-now customary chirp off the belt/clutch engaging, and tah-dah the noise is back. Turn AC off, no more noise when slowing down. Well farq. Guess I'm going to be looking for a new AC compressor, can't really do without considering the 100+ temps we get here, and if I have wife +kidlet with me they're not going to appreciate not having it
  20. That's not it, I'd hear it more from where the tranny is I figure, this actually comes way from the front of the car, had a friend with me the other day so we played "let's triangulate this noise" Turns out it's coming from the area where the AC compressor is mounted, so I guess it's about time to swap bits there, or at the very least see if I can figure out wtf's going on up in there.
  21. 2002 Terrano, 4 cylinder carburated Z24, reporting in
  22. I'm thinking AC pulley; given that it's gotten a habit of chirping like a fiend when the clutch engages, that pulley/clutch assembly might be hitting it's shelf life. Hoses are also an option since people here do tend to leave hoses on until they're cracked, which also doesn't take long with the climate down here.
  23. Varies a little bit, 600 with the AC on, about 700/800 with AC off. It had a fuel filter change (the old one got so clogged my engine would stall out on idle) and I had to tweak the carb some to get my regular idle back. The thing is though, I listened to it a bit more yesterday and it's not the belts slipping. The belt driving the AC does slip but only when the AC clutch engages and I'm over 3000 RPM; and it's a loud chirp. The sound I described might be something totally different though, I thought it couldn't be my bearings since usually when they go off they make a way different whine, but the fact it only happens when I'm letting up on the gas makes me thinks it's either the bearings going off, or my brake disks have gone screwy again (the dirt/water on the road here at times causes gunk to build up between the pads and the brake disks, or even causes the calipers to stick and not retract fully). Not sure which one of these it could be. I might just go for a complete suspension and brake maintenance round, see if that changes anything. Now to find a shop that won't charge me an arm and a leg and fskcs it up
  24. I suggest not driving it in the state it's in, if you've got bits and pieces of your suspension missing, you might end up watching your front wheel decide to take off without you, or it'll fold under, or it'll fold out, or just flat out snap something else off and you get your front wheels disagreeing on which direction to go. All these are Bad Things.
  25. Hmm, that could be it, given that lately whenever the AC clutch engages the belt driving it chirps something fierce, so might just be time to replace the belts. Weird though cos I checked them not too long ago and they seemed fine, but have to admit I've been pushing the terry a little lately.
