coming from the engine compartment (oh joy), no trouble codes except for vehicle speed sensor (already working on that) gear oil has been replaced within 8 months

so my 94 has decided to develop an odd noise today while accelerating through the first 3 gears. don't notice it in 4th or 5th, maybe because of speed. can't be something on the tire because it only happens while pushing the accelerator. its sort of a whistle/whine noise, not too loud and she still seems to be driving fine. any suggestions would be of terrific help.
