  1. Hello All,

This is a rather embarrassing thing to ask but I need to know where the powersteering reservoir is located on the 1998 pathfinder and i cant seem to locate it. All the images I have (Haynes and internet) show it in a location that doesnt hold true on my pathy...

Reason being, every time i turn the steering all the way from left to right a loud squeezing sound comes from the car. The general consensus from the internet is could be a result of low power steering fluid levels. Correct?

    Thank you for your insight,

  2. Hey,

So, like the title states, im getting what feels like a lose of power to the wheels for brief moments while driving in 1st and 2nd without the accelerator pressed in. It's not a stalling feelings, rather a lurching.

To try and give a rudimentary diagram:

driving in 1st or 2nd accelerator pressed in-> lift off power-> crawl-> power lose-> second later power back-> lose of power.... until I give it gas again.

Also, I get this when starting of a stop light or full stop in general. However, this could be better described as something holding on to the rear axle, but for a moment, and then releasing it. the sound that it makes is rather concerning.

I was hoping to get some insight. thanks for your ideas.

  3. Yah I was thinking that 1000 was way over priced and thats why i didnt have them work on it. Im thing at the cost of 60-80 buck per sensor I would just do all of them at once, save the hassel.

Does anyone still have the part numbers from the ones they used?

  4. yah that what I was thinking when they told me the cost. Im not sure which one is busted, they wouldnt tell me, Ill call back and see if someone will just tell me now, its been a week, hopefully they will let it slip. :)

  5. So I have been noticing that a) I was getting terrible mpg and B) there was some white smoke coming from the exhuast when I accelerated/ started up the car. So I started to check my oil levels, nothing.

So I gave up and took it the garage. They hooked it up to the machine, did a diagnostics and found that it was an o2 sensor (1 of 4) that was shot. They wanted to charge me something like 1000 for all 4 and 350 for just the one that was busted.

I did some research and found that parts on the Nissan parts site, they are about 150 a piece and read some articles on how to do it. My question is if anyone has done this and would care to tell me how hard it is. From the write up I feel like im am capable enough to undertake this, but I have been bitten off more then I can chew before and I'm a bit gun shy.

I guess the part Im the least clear on is the reconnecting of the sensor wire back to the wire harness.

If anyone has some input I would greatly appreciated it.

  6. Yeah... definately make sure the maintance has been done regularly... mine just hit 170k miles the manual tranny has got a serious whine (death whine), the thing overheats if I run the a/c for longer than 5 minutes, struts are blown in the front, the clutch is slipping. So I am contimplating cubing it because I don't know if it's worth the $1500 in parts I know I need to get it fixed to run another 100k miles. But that being said, if it has been taken care of these things are beasts.

Even with these problems it did better this last weekend pulling an open top 6x12 trailer packed full of probably 3k lbs of dressers, fridges, and the such than my brothers newish jeep comander pulling a 4x6 puny trailer with maybe 500 lbs of stuff.

So I am not here to discourange anyone from the R50's becasue they are a good vehicle, just don't buy a car off your parents who were the origanal owners that didn't do much beyond change the oil every 3k miles then let my wanna be nascar style big city driver of a brother borrow it for a couple of years and not maintain and abuse it. Most of the stuff going bad I can attribute to his crappy driving and not to the pathfinder being a crappy SUV since the clutch and struts were both replaces less than 40k miles ago...

You speak of the "death whine" I was hoping you might be able to elaborate on that. As it would appear that my path 98 is doing some whining of its own. But only when the clutch is dis-engaged ( foot off the clutch, neutral or ingear) I have had the clutch re done and the whine is still there so I think its the tranny and would like to know how to remidy it ( as in alternative to getting a new tranny).

    Thanks

  7. I went for a while without changing one, but they can affect your MPG. It's very simple to change. One end is a plug that plugs in to the left of the engine (I think). The other end is the sensor that simply gets screwed into the cat. I believe it is either a 21mm or 22mm wrench you need to screw it in. Here are a few tips:

    1) Soak the sensor end on the CAT the night before with PB blaster of some sort. It makes it A LOT easier

    2) Tape the plug end of the new O2 sensor to the sensor end of the old O2 sensor. This way you can pull the old one out from the engine bay, and the new one will follow the exact path of the old one and you can just plug it in

Any way that you might be able to post some photos?

  8. So the engines service light came, so I took in to the shop for a little check up. Turns out that one of the O2 sensors is dead. From my conversation with the mechanic there are 4 in total, 2 for each cat. Now my question is are these difficult to change out, and is it a bit deal if I dont replace them??

    thanks,

  9. Hey thanks for the responds.

    It has 188km on it.

If I had the tools and/or the time I would have been out there fixing, problem is i am a student and really dont have the money either.

Im an curious though, you say a trany is only $500? Hmm. What should I being searching for ( part numbers etc?)

As for as a trany service yes it was done by the stealers when i was taking it to them, now i take it to a private shop.

  10. Alright, so ill give you an intro into my trouble some situation. I have a 98 pathy and over the last 4 months I have been doing nothing but spend money to keep my truck on the road.(Break and Bearing (front) $540 & Clutch $1600) and now the trany has to by fixed, there is a bearing loose in there somewhere and its making a whinning noise and potential will lead to a lot worse, or so i have been told($2000). Also the values are leaking oil up front and its causeing a terrible smell($500). And now I find out that there was an issue with the way they did the timing belt as it would appear the water pump and then serpentine belt werent done, so really everything in the timing belt area need to be hauled out and re done. And i Know that the control arms will have to be done sometime soon, despite not getting any of the wobbles.($1200)

So the issue is do I fund this or sell? I will tell your right now that this car is truly well kept, oil change, filter changes all of it done and reorded. I got this car as the 3rd owner, my parent before me. It hasnt got a spot of rush, garage kept since we have owned it.

As I read over this now it almost slaps me in the face with what I should do, BUT I like this car. So I guess I was wondering if anyone else out there has been at this cross road and the choices they made.

    Thanks,

PS. If I did re buy it would be a Nissan either 03 R50 or Xterra.

  11. Hey so I have been wondering this for sometime and I have look at a bunch or manuals and they havent told me anything. ON the rear view mirror there is the display for the temp and direction, but it also has this strange little light up sometime with and ICE light on it. I cant figure out with that is supposed to be telling me. Is it because there is ice somewhere and a sensor is too cold or is it telling me that there is ic on the road( I highly doubr this one but hey just thought i would ask). So its not like its a huge issue, more like I want an anwser to a question that ever winter i have.

    Thanks,

  12. Hey so I have had my pathy for 5 years now and I have been noticing that over the last 6 months of so the clutch has been getting tougher and tougher to push in. Simple question really, not sure if the answer is as simple, but how can I make the clutch easier to press in?? Is this something the dealers/ shop needs to do or can i do it myself with a limited amount of tools??\

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

  13. I had my Original struts from the factory for about 60,000 km when I got my 2" lift from OME I replaced them with the OME struts that got blown in a very very short period .

Luckily I had my original struts still stored and i have mounted them on again and they are doing Perfecto .

One should not believe to much the adds for the aftermarket products .

Umm not sure but when I was looking OME doesnt make a 2 inch lift for R50's. If they do and I am mistaken please tell me where you found them, because all I can find is a 1.75" lift.

  14. Yah I asked fleury and he suggested that it might be something with catalytic converter. Im going to have them look into it when it goes in for some repairs, some dumb bitch hit me today and smashed up my front passenger side and royally fskced up the bumper and wheel well. The steering is mangled and there will be some fixings to be done. Lucky though, because had this been three weeks later all my new suspension would have been put on and wouldn't be replaced. Im pretty pissed as it is. stupid drivers :stickwack: :stickwack:

  15. Ok so I accidently posted this on the wr21 page, so they gave me some ideas about my blower motor and needing to clean it out. But I just wanted to see if anyone here had the same issue.

Ok every so often ill be driving along an my pathy will start smelling like blown out candle smoke. I have tried to narrow it down: It seems to be strongest after do a long turn where the wheel is cranked fully over, when i have been in traffic and there has been a lot of stop and go(so lots of clutch work), and sometime just when it feels like it. Anyone have a clue?

There are no fluid leak coming from under the car, checked that, oil levels are all good, brake fluid is fine...etc. Im really weirded out by it all.

    any thoughts??

So after getting home from work, the smell was there again, but only could be smelt from out side. So im going to go ahead and assume its not from the blower motor. The smell was strongest right under the divers door.

  16. Well i just ordered the parts from AC for $186.66, that doesnt include the panhard bushings( they are $60 more, and they all polyurethane. From what I have read the poly bushings are better, and I never heard anything about them cracking, but someone else who has them might wanna put some feed back in. Also the poly bushings are cut in half, so from an install stand point its going to be a lot easier.

I would say $800 is a little high, but it depends on the hourly rate.
