  1. so when you lift it you end up with over six inches of up-travel and less than 2 inches of down travel.... that sucks!!!

Depends on how much of the lift is based on spring compression vs spacer. The higher the spring compression, the more the struts are forced into minimal down travel. A spacer only, however, will not affect the travel range of the strut.

That is one of the reasons I went with the Medium OME springs because the strut still maintains a fair balance of travel over the Heavy. If I ever get a bar in the front, I will most likely upgrade to Heavy to add support.

Yes, I'm aware of the CV issues, but have yet to have any problems with them or struts topping out. Planning on manual hubs and possibly slight front diff drop if needed.

  2. What a beautiful truck to have on the trail...super pics thanks for sharing!!

Are you lifted, or is it the large Infinity appearance?

Thanks! Lifted via OME Medium Coils, 35mm Snake Racing Strut Spacers, OME shocks and KYB struts.

    Check out: Lift On

The wheels are Mickey Thompson Classic Lock powder coated black.

  3. how far away from Scottsdale is it?

I'd have to say an hour drive, 50+ miles, (seriously guessing) to the trail head, but it depends on where in Scottsdale you are. These were taken about 35-40 minutes into the trail, across the creek a few times. Fist time I was back in that area.

How long are you around here for? I'll work on better directions if you want.

  4. This area is toward Payson - about North/East of the Scottsdale area.

It rained last night and into this morning, but all it really did was keep the dust down. There wasn't any mud or standing water, except at the creek area of course.

It takes way more rain to bring mud around here. Keep in mind too, there is a bunch of sand out here too.

  5. infinqx4,

i think that the spacer on top would drop the whole strut down an inch (or however big the spacer is)

now, the other way that daddyrim just posted, is more like adding the spacer to the coil. the top of the strut ends up in the factory position so the wheel cant drop farther than OEM specs

personally im wondering how this would handle.... AC springs already have a reputation for "topping out" horrendously, i cant imagine how the suspension would behave with a 1" spacer installed between the upper and lower mounts. The suspension will probably ride at its maximum extension, creating funny handling characteristics, no???

Okay, so I get it now...But in that case, the strut is extended further. I agree about riding at maximum extension. If it's on top, the strut remains closer to OEM length, unless except of course where the coils add additional length. I thought the key was to keep the strut as close to spec for ride, etc. If it's overextended, the strut issues come into play. Six-of-one though as the other extreme brings additional CV stress.

My setup has worked great so far. Just got back from some pretty tough trails and have yet to top out the struts. And trust me, it would have topped out today for sure. I'll post some pics in another topic.

  6. Sorry, but I don't follow you...

I can see there would be issues if a spacer was installed between the top of the spring and the bottom of the mount (doubt anyone makes such a thing for the struts anyway)...but I'm not sure the difference between installing between the 2 sections of the mount, or on top. It would seem to me this is effectively the same. The spacer is still adding a height to the top of the strut without changing the strut / spring specs (ie like something extending the strut). And buy this, it would seem the height would be offset by a more severe CV angle.

I'm not an expert at this, it's just based on my limited experience.

  7. IMO, 50mm would be too much for the CVs, even with the hubs. You'd need to drop the front diff about maybe 2" to make that work.

They also offer a 25mm, closer to 1", but the 35mm would work too. I'm not sure how much higher the AC springs push up vs the OME. It seems everyone gets different results.

  8. That's kind of a tough spot. If you can't wait to save, I'd suggest doing the struts and shocks first actually. If these aren't good, the springs will totally over-power the old set and the ride and handling will be kind of a mess. Especially I would think with the OME HD front coils. :02:

As for leaving the shocks, they are the cheapest component, so I’m not sure the savings benefit, but that's your call.

  9. I'm thinking I should try to figure out a rear spring spacer too.

Buy another set of stops. Cut the rubber off the old ones, and mount the new ones against them. This will give you another inch or so. Might need new bolts, but I'm not sure.

Haven't actually see this, but I've been told it can be done.

  10. Looks nice! Congrats.

Have you checked that the CV axle rotates freely and doesn't bind when the front suspension is fully extended and the steering is fully turned left and right?

I've only been able to do some basic moves and have not run into any issues. This weekend will be telling - going to test in the dirt!

  11. Looking great... are you running 30" tire on the QX4? do you top out?

And that beadlock on your wheel looks awesome.

Thanks - Can't wait to get off the pavement!

BFG A/T's 245/70/16, comes to basically 29.5". Had a little rubbing before the lift on full turn - No problems now.

Wheels are Mickey Thompson Classic Lock, powder coated black.

    Haven't had any top-out issues. :)

  12. Can't complain about the sliders I got from them, except the install instructins were wrong...but the product was good! Regardless the spring thing is a joke. :wtf:

I've talked to a few guys, including ARB directly and everyone indicated the true HD were really not such a good idea unless you have an aftermarket bumper (ARB, go figure). The reason given was that there isn't enough weight in front of a stock R50 to compress the HD springs enough, making the ride really tough. Yeah it will raise the front a good bit, but at the cost of a reasonable ride. The weight chart you included is what I have heard as well.

This does make unfortunate sense as I have heard different responses on the HD coils and it must depend on where they were purchased from.

Good luck man - anxious to know what happens.

  13. and yup... its confirmed. I downloaded ARB's Nissan catalog as a PDF from arbusa.com

ome921 is light duty (but rocky road lists them as medium)

ome923 is medium (but rocky road lists as heavy)

ome928 is heavy duty (rocky road does not sell)

so when you buy your OME heavy duty coils from rocky road, you're really getting medium coils. I wonder how many people have been shorted on this!!! The rocky road website is many years old...

Glad I cancelled my order!! - Thanks for figuring this out.

  14. Also to point out, rocky road changed their description on their webpage to 2" lift, not 1" lift. Of course the spec sheets from ARB for the Old Man Emu's still say 0.5" lift... Is it possible that there are two versions of OMEs out there?

Went through this as well. ARB told me that Rocky Road includes some sort of spacer that adds the height. Now I know they sell a trim packer, but it sounded like there was yet a separate thing. The guy at ARB was really nice, but it seemed he was tired of answering the question. FYI - last time I spoke to Rocky Road, the OME coils were on like a 4 week back-order. He said it wasn't the supplier (I assume ARB) but that they were just behind. This was like 2-3 weeks ago. The rest of the order came in great time.

I cancelled the coils, etc and had a local shop order direct from ARB. They were delivered in like 4 days. Installing this Wednesday!

  15. The man and beast (i.e. Border Patrol and dogs) are not always the issue. Don’t forget the x-ray scanners you drive by when going over the border. We have them down here from the south at some entry points. These are very sophisticated scanners our tax dollars installed; you’d be surprised the detail. Anything that looks out of place or weird will trigger an alert. Then come the dogs and tool boxes to take apart whatever they want.

EDIT: from http://www.kvoa.com/global/story.asp?S=10038544 (local news, Tucson, AZ)

The vehicle x-ray is called the Z band Backscatter Van (ZBV), which effectively x-rays a vehicle and reveals contraband or illegals in the vehicle. When the semi was ran through the scanner Wednesday it made it's illegal cargo obvious to border agents, says Border Patrol.

Since its implementation in the Tucson Sector, the ZBV has been used 650 times and discovered a total of 1600 lbs. of marijuana.

Tucson Sector agents have arrested over 80,000 illegal aliens during the first five months of Fiscal Year 2009.

  16. Let us know how your OME spring install goes!

I just ordered OME springs too, heavy in front and medium in rear. www.ruggedrocksoffroad.com I hope to get them by the end of the week!

Finally did it huh? Good for you! Post pics :aok:

Should be done on Wednesday. Really wondering if I should upgrade the tires to M/T's while I'm at it...but there is the $$$ factor.

Picked up the rear diff guard from RockyRoad. That'll be welded on maybe Thursday.

Also found a set of PIAA 1100X lights I'd like to fit in the lower section of the front bumper - either side of the license plate. Seems like a good place for some extra light.

Pics to come - and maybe I'll actually get the thing off road in the next few weeks what a crazy idea B)

  17. I just bought a set of 1" aluminum strut spacers with Threaded half in, GR 8 hardware. Shipped (to me) for $140 cdn. They're not anodized or labeled like the snake river ones, but will do the same job I'm sure.

    That'll work for sure!

Has anyone used their skid plates, or the other mods they are offering (NX4Industries)?

  18. I run premium 91 becuase it's close in price to regular. Ran regualr 87 for years with no problems. Now that prices aren't at $4+, the difference comes to a few dollars a tank. I like the performance increase with 91 so it's worth it to me. When prices go up again (and yes I said when), I'll might go back to regular.

  19. try typing this in the google search window : 1 inch in mm

easy and fast..it works for many other conversions like : 210 AUD in USD

Yeah - they use the same stock picture for all of them.

You'll have to look for each, but the 35mm is about 1.38". (www.onlineconversion.com) I'm going to put these on with OME Medium coils. ARB says the Medium should bring 15mm over stock, based on the vehicles they tested. I know everyone has had different experiences, blah, blah, blah.... As advertised, the 35mm spacer + 15mm springs = 50mm lift or 1.96". I'm expecting at least 2.5" from where I currently sit as it's sagging like an old b**b.

What I expect is that this won't extend the strut too much risking topping out. I'm also looking at having the front diff dropped about an inch to keep pressure off the CV's. Putting on Warn hubs anyway though. I'll look into a stiffer strut when my KYB's wear out to minimize top out risk, even though i know it's low risk with OME coils anyway.

The Medium coils are going on the back with OME shocks. If it sits low in the back, I might have to even up the rear!

I'm very lucky to have been able to get these struts. Maybe someday I'll actually get there myself.
