  1. The factory roof rack on my '98 Pathfinder SE isn't wide enough to carry both kayaks/canoes we have, and I really don't want to spend the money on a Thule or other such system. Can anyone provide some suggestions on how to rig a stable, wider support with the factory rack. I actually have a pair of Thule bars, and was thinking of just bolting them to the existing cross-pieces. Stupid idea, or do you think it would work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  2. Got it. Looks like it's 4/98. Thank y'all for the help.
  3. This should be a pretty quick topic, but had to ask as I couldn't find an answer elsewhere. In ordering some parts (struts) I see you have to know when during the year your pathfinder was made. I know mine is a '98, but how do I narrow it down to the month so I order the right struts? Thanks.
  4. Thank y'all. This is some good information. I looked at the Old Man Emu coil springs. Sounds pretty good. If I were to get them, would I have to get a different size strut and shock to fit (to account for the extra 2"), or -- when ordering KYB's, Ranchos, or whatever brand -- would the standard size for a '98 still work?
  5. I read a couple of the other topics on struts/shocks, but they didn't really answer what I needed. Maybe y'all can help me out. I've got a 98' SE with no mods and 71,000 miles. The only thing that's different than when I got it is that I put 31" BFG's on it. Anyhow, I was told by the shop (and I can feel it on the road) that the struts are done. Below are my questions. Keep in mind I'm not hardcore into offroad with the Pathfinder, as it's the family vehicle. Sometime take it hunting, on the beach, or in a bit of snow, but that's about it. 1. Since I don't know any better, what should I expect needs replacing when I take it to the shop (struts, mounts, etc.)? 2. Do the coil springs need to be replaced when struts are? 2. I'm pretty sure the Pathfinder has struts in front and shocks in the back, right? Should the shocks get replaced at the same time? 3. How do the struts/shocks affect ride height? I certainly wouldn't mind getting a little lift (not enough to cause other problems) as long as it doesn't cost me a bunch of extra $$. 4. What brands of replacements would be good? 5. How much should I reasonably expect labor will cost? Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.
  6. Just curious if any of y'all have made your own roof racks that attatch to the stock one -- for kayaks, canoes, gear box, etc. ? Sure would be handy for hauling all the fishing, camping, hunting toys without having to buy one of them pricey rigs. Anybody come up with a good home-made design?
  7. Sorry if this has been beat to death in the past but I couldn't find everything I needed in other posts. If y'all can help me out I'd really appreciate it. From the other posts I understand that 31 X 10.5 tires should fit my stock '98 Pathfinder SE. Follow-up questions: 1. First, am I correct in saying they'll fit? I can just go to the tire shop and have them put on with no modifications? The 265/75/R15's on there now sure seem close to the springs/struts -- how do 31's not rub? 2. Would a change to 31's have any significant effect on gas mileage? 3. Does the bigger tire have any significant effects with regard to transmission/gearing? 4. Finally, if any of y'all run BFG All-Terrain's, what kind of mileage have y'all gotten out of them? Thank y'all.
  8. Hi y'all. I have a '98 Pathfinder SE with the automatic transmission. I bought it used a couple months ago and love the thing. I do have a question about the transmission, though. Is it normal for the shift between 1st and 2nd gears to be a bit on the jerkey side? Like I said I got it used so I don't know if it was always like that. Figured I'd run it by some other Pathfinder owners to see if y'alls does the same thing. Thanks.
