Gear from inside the '95 tranny to the '91 tranny or gear on the end of the speed sensor?

This is a question about a hardbody tranny but hoping I can get some help here. I have a 95 2wd HB that the tranny went out in. I swapped for a 91 tranny. In 94 Nissan changed from mechanical to electronic speedo. I pulled the speedo sensor from the 95 tranny (working when I pulled it)and installed it in the 91 tranny but now speedo is not working. I have been told that it should have worked. Any ideas?
