  1. My '98 Pathfinder (196,000 Chicago miles) was taken to the dealer in April 2011 when I spotted the recall recommendation on the NHTSB website. The dealer wasn't even aware of this specific recall at that moment. Still, they looked, and confirmed it was a real recall. So, off I go in a loaner/rental 2011 Nissan Rogue, at Nissan expense. Repeated calls to Nissan throughout the summer resulted in no information on the PF's status. Well, here it is November 2011. (6 months have passed.) Just got a call from Nissan's agent. They said the car is not repairable and they were preparing a buyback offer. I checked the Kelly Bluebook for value and it came up around $1800-2000 USD. However, they offered $4200 USD. And we've been driving the Rogue the whole time. All in all, not a bad deal ! Still, I'm now minus a much-needed vehicle, and what can you get for $4200 ?
  2. Check Engine Light came on. Codes say Cat Converter and/or sensor failed. Worst case, what can I expect it to cost to replace just those 2 items ? The rest of the exhaust system is brand new.
  3. Thanks, but everything electrical has been checked, too, including the connections at all the EVAP sensors, etc. The dealer told me some time ago that this can be caused by overfilling the gas tank. Any overflow "poisons" the canister and can even carry charcoal through the lines and solenoid valves. But, I DON'T OVERFILL the TANK ! I guess what I'm looking for is some discussion on design flaws, and the like. Is the EVAP canister location a poor choice ? Down low in the rear wheel area places it near the level of fuel in the tank where sloshing could lead to spillage into the canister area. I'm perfectly capable of cheating the ODB inputs. But I have an emissions test coming up soon and this isn't the time to fool around with that. Is there anyone, with more expertise than this old GM gearhead, like a Nissan-trained mechanic, that could give me more to go on ? Or am I the ONLY one with this problem ?
  4. My 98 Pathy (165K+ miles) has been having EVAP system problems since new (I'm the only owner). Usually shows up as a an OBD code related to the EVAP canister valves or an EVAP pressure problem. Canister, valves replaced a couple of times, also had the lines blown out. Lot's of carbon found there. Everything's fine for a few months then, another Check Engine Light, and we start all over again. I'm on round 4 or 5 now. I know about the filler tube rust-out recall, that's been taken care of. Gas cap is OK. Anyone know anything about this , or similar problems with 2nd generation Pathfinders ? Thanks, folks !
  5. :help: I need some intelligent advice on how to handle a repeated EVAP system problem. (5th occurence now). I keep getting various error codes related to the EVAP system (purge valve stuck, pressure errors, etc). Each time I end up replacing the canister, one of the valves, or blowing out the lines. Now I have to go in for an Emissions Test and they won't pass you with the SES light lit. That means going to a dealer or other licensed shop and it's getting EXPENSIVE. I am very well aware of poisoning the canister or washing charcoal into the lines by over-topping the fuel tank. What the H_LL is going on here? Anyone else seen anything like this ? Any suggestions, tricks, etc. ? Thanks to all !
