  1. So..... My '95 tranny is making this death whine and of course I looked up the symptoms online and found this very informative thread. Sadly, I found out to late. I changed the oil to Redline MT-90 about 5.5 quarts, figured that would be pretty dang close to 5.1 liters. Nothing changed. So.... Anyone know a shop that will fix this tranny without replacing the case in the greater Seattle area? I live in Kent so anywhere close to that would be awesome....
  2. Cool, thanks! I'll get in touch with Rob. I've considered the clear silicone too but it just seems so ugly and hokey!
  3. Reviving an old topic - anyone know where I can buy that top moulding that goes just above the windshield? I need to replace that sucker to quiet down my wind noise! Thanks
  4. Good point, I hadn't even thought about overheating the fuel pump!! Going to call it good!
  5. I did a test because of this thread and this is what I found: - After the low fuel light came on, I was able to drive 33.7 miles before I felt some sputtering (I never even knew I had that light until I read this thread because the gauge is on E long before that light comes on!) - Oddly enough, this happened right next to a gas station, I filled up and it took 19.8 gallons. I was driving around with a 5 gallon can of gas in the back, trying to get it to run dry - when I felt the sputtering and saw the gas station, I just pulled in and thought what great timing that was. Now, I'm a little suspicious about the sputtering - seems like I wasn't quite out of gas like I had thought - maybe it was crud clogging the fuel flow? I may run this test again and just keep running until it runs dry for sure so I can find out for sure... but, I worry about the sediment in the tank causing problems... any thoughts? I have a 1995 Pathfinder SE

  7. So, it's settled.... a set of real fan belts and more importantly, a cheap set of tools. Oh, and of course DUCT TAPE! Thanks everyone, you guys rock.
  8. No kidding? I told them my dilemma and they didn't offer up the loaner tools! I sure would have taken them up on that deal! They said they probably had the belt I needed but then I told them I didn't have any tools to do the repair - that's when she said to try O'Rileys! Bummer....
  9. Yeah, good points. I was thinking about making a tool kit with cheaper stuff from Harbor Freight to toss in there with some belts. The cheap tools won't be missed as much if someone rips them off! That's probably a better idea that the hokey emergency belt anyhow! I think I caused the premature failure of this belt from tensioning it too tightly.
  10. Any one have any experience with these? I've seen them before - you can cut to size and clamp it together to keep you going for a bit... I ask because: Last Friday, I'm out hunting around Greenwater, WA. I am in the sticks, by myself (well, had a dog with me but other than someone to complain to, he wasn't much help). As I'm driving towards home, the alternator (and brake) lights come on. I think - well, I've been through a ton of water, maybe it's wet and that's interfering with it or something (yes, I know dumb thought but...) A little while later, I see the temp gauge is headed towards maxing out. Geez. I pull over to see what's up and you guessed it - busted fan belt that drives the alternator and water pump/fan. And, of course, I'm not in town yet but at least I'm close. Problem is, I don't have any tools with me so I can't just buy the normal belt and slap it in there in the parking lot of Autozone or something. I limp into Bonnie Lake and hit up Autozone, looking for one of those emergency belts I've seen in the past. They don't have one. Neither does O'Rileys. So, I think about how I heard pantyhose can work in a pinch. I buy a few at Rite Aid. They don't work for crap. Let's say the engine is idling at 800 RPMs, the pantyhose is doing about 9 RPMs. I went to Walmart and looked for that damn emergency belt. No luck. I bought a bike tire inner tube and carefully cut a strap of that and tied it in there - worked for about 3 minutes. So, finally, what works? DUCT TAPE. That's right, duct tape. I taped the busted fan belt where it broke and it worked - lasted for about 5 miles or so. And, it broke again. And again, and again. I kept this routine up until I got home but about 3 miles from the house, the belt busted again (in a new place even - so now I had two individual pieces of the belt) and it knocked the A/C belt off the pulley. I cut that sucker out and limped home - stopping several times along the way as the engine got too hot. It was an adventure and I will always carry duct tape from now on. So, after the long, drawn out story, anyone ever use one of those emergency fan belts? A friend told me he used Rescue Tape once for an emergency fan belt and said it worked like a champ.... I was thinking about throwing one of these things in an emergency kit in my truck along with some normal belts and tools for the next time. Thoughts?
  11. I bought one of those cheap China-made HID kits from eBay and installed them in my Pathfinder. They are a huge improvement over the stock crappy bulbs but overall - they sort of suck. They scatter the light all over the place. I taped off the top inch or so of my lenses to keep from blinding other drivers, it seems to have helped - I haven't been flashed since. I got a hi/lo version that actually physically moves the bulb forward and back inside the lens housing to accomplish the different beam patterns. The high setting projects a much better beam pattern but obviously it would blind oncoming traffic. Here's the real goofy part - the hi and low are opposite now. The power for the low beam turns the bulbs on. The power for the high beam moves the bulb back and forth. But, the low beam bulb position throws the light far and narrow and the high beam bulb position throws the light wider and less far. So, I get to drive around with the blue light on in the instrument cluster all the time . Overall, I'm not super happy with them and will be looking for a better solution some time in the future. I'll keep using them for now because they are much better than the stock bulbs but not the best solution out there, that's for sure.
  12. Here's a couple of pics of my truck.... I don't have many yet. Yes, those are Toyota rims... I got a great deal on 5 of them with BFG a/t mounted so - matching set with the spare!
  13. Hello folks, I'm a new member from the Seattle area (a little south of the actual city but hate to admit I live in Kent...) I've got a 1995 Pathfinder SE that I use to get me out into the sticks to hunt, fish, hike and stuff like that... I'm not really interested in hardcore off roading, just like my girl to get me out and more importantly - back in one piece! So far, she has been doing a fantastic job. I've used the forum many times to get info I need - like when I broke the autohubs and wanted to install some manual ones. I finally decided to stop being a lurker and join the group in earnest! This place is a wealth of knowledge and I truly appreciate all the members that have taken the time to post and share their experience with all of us, it has been incredibly helpful and helps us all save a ton of cash! I am a relatively inexperienced mechanic type but have done many basic things over the years on a variety of vehicles - stuff like: change out alternators, water pumps, starters and other easy stuff like that. I'm about to start on my first CV axle soon. I also bought a 3" body lift kit some time back that I have been a little intimidated by but want to get that kit in eventually - I'm sure I'll be poring over this forum for advice and tips when that time comes! Thank you again, David.
