Transmission Rebuild Question

I'm hoping to get some feedback from someone who has successfully rebuilt their manual transmission.

 

I'm rebuilding an FS5R30A 5-speed out of a 95 Pathfinder with the V6. I've already reassembled the transmission once for practice, (long story) and have since taken it back apart. I'm not saying this is easy but I'm confident I'll get it right.

 

My question involves the "gear end play", not the "shaft end play". The "shaft end play" can be compensated with different sized C-clips, spacers, thrust washers, snap rings, etc.

 

Gear end play is defined as the clearance between the gear and the collar on the shaft OR the clearance between two gears.

 

Page 59 in the FSM lists the end-play specs for each gear. What has anyone done to accurately press the gears on the various shafts with the correct clearance between the gears?

 

I've read hundreds of online posts and lots of people talk about how critical it can be but no one covers how to get it an accurate .009" to ,013" clearance gap, for example

 

The writeup on Beer Garage is the most comprehensive one I could find and he only mentions to take the measurements. I'm hoping someone has a slick way of getting this done. I've thought of putting three tiny pieces of printer paper between the gears when I press them on, that would get me about .012"

 

This is my first tranny rebuild and it's gone smoother that I had hoped for, just need to get over this final hurdle. Thanks in advance.

I haven't rebuilt one so I can only give you suggestions.

 

You could use size shims used for ring and pinion gear installs, shock valving, etc or just shove a feeler gauge in there and pressing it on. Maybe just press and check clearance each time until you get where you need?

Thanks for the response. I liked your idea of using feeler gages so I bought a pair from Harbor Freight today. I'll find a way to make a simple jig that will hold them flat while I press on the gears.
