93 Automatic Transmission Problem

Hello Everyone,

 

I bought a used Pathfinder and am having problems with the auto transmission. It sometime will not shift out of first gear. Whether or not I stop, put back in park, or try using 2nd or 1st gear, it sometimes will not shift from 1st. This just happended to me for the third time and all of a sudden, it will start working properly. I am wondering if it may be a ECT issue or maybe it just needs to be flushed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just drove 15 miles at 15mph because of this and then it started working fine a mile from my house!! Frustrating!

Pathy trannys are very complex. There are a multitude of things that can go wrong and cause your problem. Electrical is definitely one of them. There is a speed sensor on the top of the tranny. If that goes bad there is no speed input to the computer, so it does not shift. While the problem can be internal with the clutches or a valve hanging up my guess is a bad sensor someplace. The tranny manual has a complete step by step diagnosis of the tranny and how to find the problem.
