check engine light code question.

I have an off and on check engine light over the last couple years and it is always code p1167. Which is the post converter left bank O2 sensor exceeding maximum voltage. Is this telling me the O2 is going bad or is it an issue with the catylic converter not doing its job. It will come on for a few driving cycles then it goes back off and might not show up again for a couple months. If it is an 02 sensor, I have heard you have to have ecu reflashed to accept replaced sensor, is this true?

thanks!

ECU reprogramming is only necessary if there is a specific set of codes (which does not include P1167) *and* if the code reappears after O2 sensor replacement. It also might help to know what year you R50 is. The O2 sensor is the more likely culprit, and is a cheaper fix than changing out a cat.

There is a TSB for that code....

NTB03-011 February 5, 2003

2002 PATHFINDER; MIL "ON" WITH REAR O2 SENSOR

DTC P0138/P0139/P0158/P0159/P1147/P1167

APPLIED VEHICLES: 2002 Pathfinder (R50)

IF YOU CONFIRM:

An applied 2002 Pathfinder has the MIL "ON" and any of the following DTC’s are stored in

the ECM:

• P0138 (Bank 1) H02S2 (Rear) (High Voltage Monitoring)

• P0139 (Bank 1) H02S2 (Rear) (Response Monitoring)

• P1147 (Bank 1) H02S2 (Rear) (Max Voltage Monitoring)

• P0158 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (High Voltage Monitoring)

• P0159 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (Response Monitoring)

P1167 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (Max Voltage Monitoring)

If this bulletin applies,

• Perform ECM Reprogramming. This is required if the ECM Part Number (P/N) in the

vehicle matches one of those listed under “Current ECM P/N” in Chart A on page 3.

• Replace the Rear Oxygen Sensor(s). This is required if ECM Reprogramming is

needed.

When I replaced my post-cat O2 sensor for P0158, I used this Bosch direct-fit sensor from AAP. Bosch was the manufacturer of the stock sensor for my 2001.5, so it's probably yours too. Order that sensor online and use discount code VISA and pick-up in store to get it for only $50 before tax.

You'll need a 7/8" or 22mm oxygen sensor socket, too.

The ecm reprogram is designed to work with the new type sensor. Not too sure if you will still have issues if you use a aftermarket sensor. Oh, the dealer will not reprogram the ecu for free. They should charge you one hour for reprogramming. They may want to charge you diagnosis, but tell them you just want the reprogramming per the TSB. Make sure you get the ECM part numbers before and after the reprogramming(a good tech will attach it to the repair order. Have them make copies for you). That way if you ever have issues in the future, you know the ecu has been updated.
