NEED HELP! VG33E valve cover grommets, metal things they sit in

hey guys

 

I feel like a dumb ass. I was doing my valve covers...started w/the driver side PITA

 

the fel-pro set I got came w/ new grommets

 

The old set I removed looked like they had metal bottoms or something. My dumb ass never thought the metal part was removable so when I reinstalled with the new grommets I just used them, no metal trays on the driver side

 

got it all back together and was cleaning up...dropped one of the old grommets and the metal part on the bottom popped off

 

first thought...@!*%! should I have used them with the new grommets?? buddy who works @ a shop said I should have...u guys concur?
