91 Auto tranny installation questions/issues

A little back story:

I recently purchased a 91 pathfinder, 4x4, se model, auto transmission. It had been sitting for I am guessing at least a year. The woman who owned it before me hit a deer and smashed the right front pretty good. She also hit a fence after she lost control I believe.

The guy I got it from bought it from her intending to fix the damage and throw some paint at it and sell it. Once in his possesion he found it needed a transmissionm rebuild/replacement. He pulled the tranny and sent it out for rebuilding, only to be involved in a serious accident shortly afterwords, leaving him unable to re-install the transmission when it came back.

So, he paid someone else to put the transmission back in. Whoever this was got the tranny mostly back in and then disappeared. By mostly I mean the thing is bolted up to the engine, torque converter is bolted up, and the crossmember is attached on one side fully (bolts not torqued), and the bolts halfway in on the other side.

Nothing major really. I have done engine/tranny swaps in a lot of vehicles (rabbits, golfs, jettas, an mr2, blazers, various saabs, a conquest).

Now we come to the issue, and what I think scared the dude away. I think he got it bolted back together and realized he had no idea about plugging everything back in and would have to pull the thing again to get at some of the plug locations.

The pathfinder's tranny has apparently 5 or 6 plugs/wires going into it from what I could find looking at a wrecked 94 in a scrapyard.I can only get at the passenger side of the transmission on that wreck and was able to vaguely decipher where 3 plugs go, the rest is a mystery, with the exception of the sensor that bolts in on top of the housing for the transfer case where it attaches to the tail shaft.

So what I need to know is what and where all the wires/plugs go. as previously stated I think I have a clue on 3 of them, but not positive. None of the manuals I have show anything helpful to be honest(chiltons, haynes, fsm), or if they do i missed it.

Thanks in advance for any help I can get, and sorry if this should have been in the garage section instead of here. I intend to duplicate this post on a cpl other nissan/pathfinder forums as well.

Are the wires that connect to them still hanging around? From what I recall of my '89 there is at least the following:

  • Two 2-pin connector that go to two sensors that screw in the passenger's side (park, reverse, 4WD, neutral switch; I've heard different things)
  • A bundle of wires that goes from the switch near the shift linkage that makes the shift indicator lights work. These should go up into the engine compartment and get connected there.
  • A bundle of wires that are hard-wired into the tranny (these make it shift/work) that should get connected in the engine compartment.
  • The sensor on top of the transfer case you already mentioned.

There's a bracket up in the engine compartment (on the passenger's side, kind of by the wheel well and the wiper motor) with some tabs that hold several connectors in place that are for the tranny. The wires from the tranny should get routed up to these connectors. Hopefully everything is there and connected and you can just re-plug everything.

Again this applies to an '89 and is entirely from memory. I know you need more info than that but hopefully it will at least get you started.

I've got some FSM schematics coming so maybe I'll be more help later. :crossedwires:
