Engine acting funny

My engines making a loud thud noise when i start it up. i did i diagnosis check and said its ok but now the engine light comes on when im not giving it gas. If i'm giving it gas its off but when i let off to shift or sitting out of gear it comes on. any ideas what it is? btw its an 88 se v6 manual

Just a one time thud or several in a row? Is is like a back-fire like and exhaust thud, or like metal hitting metal thud?

Thud noise when the starter first engages? When the engine is turning over (one thud per rotation)? Once the engine catches and runs on it's own? Repetitive thuds?

 

As far as the engine light goes, I didn't think our early years even had one. There should be 4 on the main cluster, oil light, brake light, seatbelt light, and battery light. Then below there's a transmission temp light, defrost, 4x4 light, and 2 cruise control lights. Which light is coming on?

 

Any differences in power, engine note, smoothness?

If its only when the engine is cranking and not running then it's probably starter related. If it's always thudding even if its running then man you got a problem...

 

Yes, mine is an SE, says in my signature.

nah its just when its starting. oh well. il have the father look into it hes a genius
