1440 Ses Code

Hello there, gentlemen,

So, I need a little help/advice. I think I know the next step I need to take, but I thought I'd check in with you guys and see if you have any ideas.

My '98 has been throwing a couple of different EVAP codes for close to a year now and I've finally gotten fed up enough to do something about it. I've gone in periodically and had the codes read to make sure it's still the same problem, and I've gotten a couple different codes: 1440, and 1447. Currently, it's been only showing the 1440.

Now, I know that the most common cause of a 1440 is the gas cap. And I know if it's throwing 1447 that I need to replace the charcoal canister and valve(s) and blow out the lines. So, last week I went ahead and purchased a new gas cap (figured I'd start with the cheap fix) and went to AutoZone and had the code cleared. I have not made it back in yet to get the code read again (it just came back yesterday), but I'm pretty sure it's going to be the same one (1440). Here's my question: if it is the 1440 code, should I still proceed with replacing my canister and blowing out my lines? I know it would be pretty cut-and-dried if it throws a 1447 code, but what about a 1440? I don't mind doing all this (I've already purchased all the necessary parts), I just wanted some more experienced advice on whether the charcoal canister problem can cause the 1440 code to show up.

Thanks (in advance) for the help....

What you need to have done is a smoke test. Find a local garage with a smoke machine and have the service done. You then will know exactly where the leak is. My '99 is throwing the same P0440 code multiple times. I havn't had the smoke test done yet, but I have a buddy with a tester, he'll do it after work someday. He said that these R50's have a tendancy to have small hairline cracks on the top of the sending unit. He has already replaced two of them this year. Access to the sender is under the rear seat, driver side. There is a small plate, remove that and there you go.

Just something else to think about. I would let the smoke test find out for sure.

What happens with the canisters is that the charcoal beads get sucked all the way up to the intake. Unfortunatly what can happen, is those beads get stuck in just about every solenoid and line in the system. The purge volume control valve in the engine compartment can also stick open slightly, so check that also.
