I bought a stock muffler from a auto parts store and I am trying to install it myself.

The new muffler is attached to the tail pipe. I can't seem to weave it over the rear axle and around the gas tank. The rear tires are elevated off the ground about a foot. Do I need to get it higher?

 

Your help is greatly appreciated, I'm new here

:blink: the exhaust doesn't go "over" the gas tank...... it goes alongside it.... likey this....

sure you have the right "in and out" set up.. or the muffler backwards?

Ok, but to install the new muffler I start from underneath the vehicle and try to weave it over the rear axle and along side the gas tank but I can't seem to get it thru with all the bends. Am I missing something?

try threading the pipe through without the muffler attached (or has it been welded on already?).... if the muffler is attached, try turning the pipe and wiggling it until it goes through. patience and a BFG help ;)P...

 

*BTW* work from front (toward front of pathy) to the back ;)

You do have it jack up by the body, not the axle, right?
Yeah, that would give you more room to work with if you jacked it up by the frame and maybe even disconnect the rear swaybar to let the axle droop. Edited by jj big shoe

when i had my exhaust built it was on a hydraulic lift.... they took the new pipe (rear section) put it over the axle. then got the muffler and wiggled it up in there and welded away. nothing but the entire pathy was up in the air.... it was a snug fit they way i had them build it but after some finnageling..it all went together nicely.

patience and persistence........ it'll go. ;)

lifts are nice, but if you don't have access to one, you need to get some ground clearance with a jack for the pipe to go over the axle. Also, many OEM style come with the pipe pre-welded to the muffler, making it that much longer and difficult. But, it can be done - I've done it twice on my '92.
