  1. what brand do you all use? should i look for NKG?

Your best bet when it comes to plugs is to go with what the manufacturer recommends. You can spend a bunch of money on plugs that claim all kinds of wonderfull improvements, but when it comes right down to it, nothing is better than original equipment. If you can prove me wrong, "anyone" I'd love to hear from you. Thanx.

  2. Yes, I tried searching... no luck...

I... actually don't know where my oil pan is... I have two large pans under the truck, one I assume is oil, the other transmission.

Is the oil pan the smaller, taller one near the front with the bolt on the SIDE that looks to be about 1/2 inch?

Or is it the larger one near the middle of the truck with the 1 inch bolt on the bottom that's rusted tight?

Thanks for your help *blushes* Sorry to be stupid.

First of all there is no such thing as a stupid question. That's how we all learn.[asking questions] I think changing your own oil is a good step in trying to do alot more of regular maintaince to your pathy. I work on all makes and models of pretty much everything you can think of all day long, 6 days a week, for close to 20 years . I love it when people take the bull by the horns and try things themselves. I would recommened buying a copy of Haynes Repair Manual for your specpic year, make and model. I 've been a mechaic for almoust 20 years and own my first Pathfinder. I love it, and will never own anything else sgain. I'm going for 500,000 miles before

any engine work.359,000 so far. Oh yah, the oil pan is the closest to the front of the vehicle. It's probably a 14 mm wrench to remove the drain plug. Good luck man, don't feel stupid for asking questions.

  3. Well, thats about as inteligently as I can break it down right now. Please vote and feel free to post caviots, it may flavor the empirical data... Thanks !

I had to throw in the MT as a control group... sssh

    B

My '88 Pathy 2-Door with MT has over 224,000 miles on it with no trans. troubles and the original clutch!!! Nissan's, gotta love them.

  4. Every 88 Pathfinder has a MAF sensor unless it's carbureted. It's an integral part of the FI system, otherwise it'd need a MAP sensor and I've never heard of anyone having one of those.

Here it is... on the driver's side of the TBI.

From: How To Clean Your MAF Sensor in the How-To section...

hey, thanks for the info on the maf sensor on the '88 3.0. i'll be honest, i had no idea. i'm planning on pulling mine off this weekend. i'd like to think this could be part of my fuel consumption woes. once again, thaks.

  5. I am planning to get rid of the cat converter. My only concern is a CEL. :suicide:

Does anyone knows if an 89' Pathy (3/89) has an O2 sensor behind the cat?

nope. the o2 sensor is before the cat. i gutted my cat and opened up a bunch more noticeably ponies. it isn't that much louder. in Canada you don't need a cat if it is pre 1991. i say Canada but i guess i should say everywhere except ontario and BC.

  6. My 1988 pathfinder 4x4 wont start after i cleaned the maf and o2 sensors. It ran the best it has ever run since i had it so smooth and quiet like brand new, then i turned it off and let it sit maybe 2 hours then checked the oil and tried to start it just keeps turning over, it's getting gas we dont know about the spark. But it happend so fast no warning.

you say you cleaned your maf sensor on an '88 pathfinder w\ a 3.0l? interesting, because my '88 pathy w/ the 3.0l v-6 is of the tbe brand and dosn't have a maf sensor. if your '88 has a maf sensor i'd love to hear about it.

  7. sounds kinda like my Pathy when I first bought it as well...Now a grand or so later (due mostly to the lift) and she's turned into something I am really attached too...

Therefore, I say fix it. The majority of the work you can do yourself without spending a lot $$$. The rust stuff is really no big deal. All you need is a few sheets of steel from a local hardware store, a grinder, and a welder. Problem solved! If the tranny quits on you (not that I am saying it will), that will of course be a bigger problem...but you could probably get your hands on a Pathy 5spd for a couple hundred bucks. Like redfinder said...change the tranny fluid...and also add an external tranny cooler, and you will hopefully extend the life of your transmission.

you mention an external oil cooler on a 5 spd. stadard transmission. i've never heard of such a thig. perhaps if this is somethig new i'd love to hear about it.

  8. i'm new to this site and having a little trouble figuring all this out. please bare with me. i own my first pathfinder, and i fregggginnn' love it. 1988 2-door, 3.0L, 5 spd. i'm a 4th year apprentice auto tech. and would love to hear from people who know these little suv's inside & out. help!!!!
