  1. Picked up my 96 pathfinder in December from a guy who was using it as a 3rd vehicle and was moving.  Got a pretty good deal on it, and have done some things to it to get the mpg’s up, as when I got it I was getting single digit mpg (like 9mpg).  So far I’ve:

-Changed out the MAF sensor, TPS, coolant temp sensor, relocated the knock sensor, and changed both bank 1 O2 sensors.

-Fixed the rear hatch (it had been rear ended and the lock mechanism was destroyed in the process, locking the hatch closed)

    -Changed the fluids.

My future plans for it are to find some Land Rover springs for the rear and spacers for the front, new struts and rear shocks, new steering rack (mine is pissing power steering fluid, only leak on it), and a roof rack of some type.  I’ll add pictures as soon as I figure out how to resize them from my phone.

To be honest, until I visited a junkyard for other parts and was fortunate enough to acquire the battery cable, I fully believed my solution was permanent. I’m sure whatever you came up with is fine.

Actually just went to my junkyard and found what might be a solution in a 97 Maxima cable.  I think I’ll be able to make something more permenant with it, if not just bolt it on and call it good.  On a side note, the interiors of every pathfinder there (3 R50s) had great seats-except the driver seat.  All were trashed.  The junkyard chain here is running a $15 per seat promo and I was ready to get new seats (mine are pretty trashed-all of them, not just the drivers seat) for $45 plus tax.  Oh well, the search will continue.

Are you referring to the cable that is actually 2 8Awg cables wrapped together which plug into the positive battery terminal and go into the fuse box and terminate at the BATT fuse? That is a part best sourced from a junkyard. If you can’t find one, you can do what I did. I bought a short length of positive 4awg cable, maybe 12 or 16 inches long, from either Batteries+Bulbs or an auto parts store. I ground off the sides of one end of the cable so it so it would fit on the lug in the fuse box, and bent and routed it back through the original hole in the fuse box to the battery. You’ll have to split the top and bottom of the fuse box apart to do this. Then, I unscrewed the 10mm bolt on the positive battery terminal and inserted the other end of the new cable onto the clamp, then reinstalled the bolt. I may have also ground down or flattened the edges of the cable to fit on the clamp. Last year, I found a cheap replacement part at a junkyard, so I swapped it back to OEM.

This is exactly what I’m talking about.  I put a marine terminal on my battery and soldered on a 3/8 ring terminal to connect it.  It’s working but I’d like a more permenant solution.  Guess I’ll go check out the junkyard and see what they’ve got.

Looking for the specific OEM part before I go that route.  Mostly for the box the fusible links connect to the battery terminal.  I know I can cut the blade terminals off and put on ring terminals, but I like to keep things OEM as much as possible.  I’ll go that route if I have to, but I’d like to see if I could find the original one first.

  5. Long time lurker and search user, but I can’t find anything on this one.  Does anyone know where I can find the positive battery cable?  Or how I could make a new one?  I tried to remake the current one by grinding down the copper fusible link point and putting a new connector on the cable, and putting them both onto a marine battery terminal, however the cable is too corroded at this point.  Wound up with a dead battery last night, luckily I made it home before it died on me.

I know the battery is a good one (less than 6 months old).  I have not tested the starter or alternator yet, because the cable is toast anyways and need replacing.  Thanks for the help, and I’ll make sure to put up a build thread in a few with pics of my R50

  6. Hey everyone, just bought a 96 XE yesterday, and found the forum after searching for fixes for various little things that come with a 20+ year old car.

I have some plans for it, first of which is to install manual locking hubs to reduce drag on the front CV axles and maybe get a little better gas mileage.

I’ll add pictures as soon as I can get to my desktop.  Looking forward to learning more about the specific quirks that come with a pathfinder.
