My 99.5 3.3L is losing a lot of coolant. Typically, it only needs a top off, so this is unusual. It runs and sounds fine, no loss of power. There has been a little bit of white smoke from the tail pipe I've noticed on the passenger side here and there, but not much and not always and because it's been so cold, it could just be condensation. The temp gauge never changes. I don't see any leaks on the ground or water. I do see some around the hoses. And it will drop coolant just sitting over night. I'm leaning towards a hose or radiator cap, but what do other people think? Thanks.

Thanks for responding 5523Pathfinder. I have done more research and determined that indeed the whole brake system needs replacing. I'm the second owner and am friends with the first and they replaced the brakes once, so I'm guessing the rotors have never been replaced and it has 240k on it, so it is indeed time for everything to go. Hello, I believe my 99.5 Pathy is ready for a brake job, but before I go in and spend a lot of money, I would like to know if there's anyway I can know (without taking the brakes apart myself, which I can't do) if I need more than brake pads. The r50 has always had a rocking (not grinding or screeching) sound when applying the brakes, like a bed squeeking that moves in motion with the body. Like something hasn't been oiled. Could this be the brakes or something else? I know it's going to need the pads replaced, but if there's more like the rotors, etc., I'd like to have some fore knowledge before I go into the shop. Thanks everyone. This set is questionable, but the other two are just outright bald, bald, bald and needed to be replaced. The set in the pictures look a little more worn in real life than they do in the photo. You can see noticeable cracks, although the tread is fairly good. It looks like an old, dried up rubber band. I don't feel great about them. But the front two had to go. They were bad. I didn't feel good about them or safe. From what you guys have said, there are a few things I can do. I'd like to get the extra inch lift, so I might just wait till next month and have them all put on at once, which is basically two weeks away. Thank you all. The help has really been so great. I haven't owned a car in a long time. I had a 76 Bug many years ago, and I've never had a truck or a 4x4. I'm really glad I do now, I've always wanted one.

Hello, I know this question isn't specific to Pathy's but I've had such good luck here getting solid car information, I'm hoping someone can fill me in. I've got a laundry list of things I need to do to my 1999.5 SE, tires being one of them. How long do you think I can let these tires go before I replace them? I know they are cracked but not worn to the nib. I'd like to do some "tune-up" like things to the engine first, especially to help with MPGs, such as air filter, and what not; everything people told me about in my last question. Do you think I can put off the tires till after I get some engine work done or should I do the tires first? Also, I did buy two new tires for two that really were too far gone. They are an inch larger than the others. I read on here that I don't have to have both front and back sets of tires the same height. Is this true? Thanks! Chris

Hello, someone just gave me a 1999.5 Pathfinder SE. She had it for 4-5 years and I'm pretty certain hasn't done much maintanence on it except maybe had the oil changed. It being such a great car and engine it has stood up to this abuse BUT it's MPG is low, just a little under 12. After reading these board, I'm thinking with someone maintance, the MPGS might go up. I read on here someone did some TLC to his Pathy and gets 19mpg. So, I have a few questions: #1-- What is a reasonable mpg on a well maintained Pathy? What can I except? I know it's not ever going to do 45mpg. But is 19mpg a good goal? 15? Or do some just run 12mpg unless you do quite a bit to it. #2--Here's my list of things to have done under the current conditions. What else do you think I should add? Spark Plugs Fuel Filter Distributor Cap Distributor Rotar Air Filter MAF Sensor Knock Sensor H2O Sensor The car before her was owned by her x-husband for 10 years and he's a maintaince guy; so it's early life was pretty good. But the last 4-5 years I'm sure it has not gotten what it needs to run at it's best. Even considering, the engine sounds damn good. It's got a great sound to it. It doesn't leak a damn thing underneath (the sun roof it another issue) and it always turns over. After doing my research on these cars, I am super grateful to have such a solid vehicle and love driving it even though I live in the city and it is big for the city. Thanks! Chris
