I am new to the forum but have owned my pathfinder on and off since 2000. I got her with 56k miles, drove her to 190k then sold her to my cousin for his high school / early college ride. After some smoking they gave me bak the car because they know I love it. Now that I have it back I want to make it the truck I always wanted in my younger days.
My ride is a 97 2wd. Although it would be cheaper to sell and buy a 4x4, I want to convert this one because of the sentimental value. I have read a long thread regarding converting a later model r50 and have been doing some reading in the fsm. I keep this ride at a lake house so I don't have full time access to the truck.
I have a couple questions.
Based on the fsm it looks like the transmission are identical between 2wd and 4wd. The only difference is the output housing that allows the 4x4 version to bolt on the transfer case. Can anyone confirm. Id rather just replace the housing then swap the transmission.
It looks like the 97 2wd has a 4 bolt flange on the rear end. Is this shared with the 4wd? The build log used early and late r50 parts and I'm not sure if the rear end connection changed. They had to buy a new rear end.
They way I see it I need the following parts to make the conversion.
Tranny output housing
Transfer case and mounting brackets
Front and rear driveshafts
Front spindle Assemblies
Transfer case shifter
Floor panel with hole for shifter
4x4 center console
What am I missing?
I would do a lift, wan hubs and a suspension rebuild. I know I'll have more in this truck then it is worth but I love the old ride.
