  1. Pulled the cap, it had some minor white deposits on the outer electrodes, center one fine, cleaned all leads and reinstalled...

Found the TPS pretty easy, how do I check the output though?

Also pulled air intake off to look inside at the throttle plate it's all clean and shiny still.

edit -- I also read somewhere that it might be the auxialiary air valve. I've found where that is as well but not sure how to check it.

    Cheers

  2. .

When it was hydrolocked, did it gulp water and outright die or did it just sip and stumble?

    B

One of the stupider things I've done for sure. It gulped it down and died outright.

Cap rotor and wires are all new since after the hydrolock. I replaced and flushed every part I could think off. So pretty new. I can pull it again and take a peek.

Where would I find the TPS?

  3. Well, there aren't any good codes... the knock sensor code can put the engine into 'limp home' mode, which limits the engine to 3000 RPM, if it looks like the engine is knocking due to pre-detonation. IIRC it needs to get above a certain level for the computer to go into limp mode? It's clearly not in limp mode, but the sensor code suggests that the steering wheel isn't all that's shaking.

I suspect you have a timing issue, which is making the engine fire wrong, setting off the sensor.

Yes, I've done some research on it and called the dealer even. Dealer mechanic doesn't know what it is, but did mention that in 99% of cases the knock sensor gets set off it's by something and not the sensor being defective. In 10 years he said he's replaced only one.

So I have two conclusions so far... Neither very good.

First is that the timing is messed up and needs work asap... But I don't know why it would only mess up at a certain speed... Everywhere else in my driving range is fine....

Which sort of led me to my second conclusion. The torque converter is on it's way out, which totally blows. I got some Lube Gard for it to see if that might help... If it is the torque converter I'm probably looking at a new vehicle.

Other than that diagnosis, I'm not sure what else it could be..

  4. You can start by checking your codes, it sounds like the common coolant temperature sensor. When was your fuel filter last changed?

6 days ago when I did the fuel pump.

also did oil change, air filter, checked all other fluids and topped up if need be.

I pulled spark plugs to check em all were good only 10,000 oil. regapped one as it was a nerd off.

I will try checking codes tmrw AM, although engine light has never been on.

    Thanks

edit - come to think of it, the tempature gauge gets shaky sometimes and dances up and down.

  5. Hey guys,

I tried searching this up with the search function but I wasn't having any luck (I'm on an iPhone), so I was hoping if I posted up maybe someone knows what's up.

Here's my problem, it started a month ago with the truck bogging out when cold and having a rough start from a dead stop. Then it eventually just did not start altogether. Couple raps on the tank and off it goes, so I put a new (used) fuel pump in, and it starts fine now, but it still bogs out when cold and rough starts... However, I have a new issue now, when I am going above 60km/h to 90km/h and coasting at any speed in that range, the truck gets 'stuck' at 2000 rpm and shakes badly, can feel it in the steering wheel. I have to hammer down and force the automatic tranny to shift to make it go away. It never did this before the new fuel pump, but honestly I can't be 100% sure because I wasn't driving it a whole lot since it started messing up, as I got laid off around the same time (isn't that the way, truck breaks when I run outta work).

I am going to be checking tranny/motor mounts tomorrow... but honestly I just don't really know where to start. I don't want to think it's the tranny, but it could be a real possibility, as it feels like it gets caught up in a certain gear-range and chugs until I force it to shift.. But I hope it's a stupid sensor or something... Really need some advice on this one. As I said I ran outta work and getting more sucks without wheels. Am driving a gas guzzling van in meantime and it's killing me on fuel.

    Thanks,

    Nade

p.s. - The truck WAS hydrolocked 7 months ago but I drained vast majority of water and did new air filters and plugs etc before I restarted it, and it's been fine for awhile so I think it's unrelated but might as well mention it.

edit--- almost forget the important stuff... 1993 Pathfinder 3.0L XE 4x4, automatic.

  6. word mines been intermintent since may of last year, but latley its just outta hand, but after i got the 02sensor replaced doing pretty good, and the tps had a cut wire in a bad way so its just kinda rigged up for now, i would just feel better not having a busted one on it. and my fuel filter is still pretty new, but it can't hurt to get another one, just too lazy i guess, thanks man hope it'll help my poor truck.

well i got the fuel filter for like 10 bucks and it took me all of half an hour to do it (including getting out tools and cleanup), so it's not really a bad idea.... its not going to hurt anything thats for sure.

  7. I'm having a problem that sounds just like that. I took my MAF out and cleaned it really good and the problem became more intermittent, but it hasn't gone away. I'll be trying to fix mine too, as it sounds like the same issue, I'll let you know if it stops completely.

  8. Haha thanks adam and that's probably the best idea, do the timing belt first. unfortunately it needs tires so bad it's not funny. Everytime I hit even a speedbump I think one of the cracks is gonna go through all the way. It's pretty bad haha

oh yeah I'll watch out for Pezzy there  haha

Don't wanna get on the bad side of an admin hahaha

  9. Howdy Nade, and welcome!!

That's a nice looking truck!! I'm sure we can guide you with how to modify what ever you plan to (or not). I see some of it has sarted already... ;)

    B

Oh, you posted right as I did! I missed quoting you with the rest of the guys

Thanks for the welcome man, and I'm starting to see just how much information is on these boards... It's impressive to say the least!

P.S- Sorry for the double-post, is that against the rules on these boards?

  10. thanks. yeah. yours look like it has the high level of the XE trim. power and/or heated mirrors, roof rack (had to add mine), tire carrier (in process of adding one). t-bar crank helps the look a bit too. and fitting tires.

Yeah it has power mirrors and all the bells and whistles. The only option it doesn't have is the sunroof (but those always leak anyway). I'm actually thinking of taking the tire carrier off and putting a cage on the roof for the tire and various other things, just because I think that looks really impressive. I'm not sure of the cons of removing all that weight in the back though, and then putting it on the roof. I'm going to have to research it alot before I make a decision.

Kyle! Quit hogging the welcome thread! P...

    :D

Welcome to NPORA, Nade! That's a nice clean looking pathy.

Haha don't be mad I enjoyed the conversation

    Thanks!

    Hey there Nade.

Nice find! Exterior looks like its in great shape. Lets see some pictures of the interior and some specifics.... Mileage, auto or Manual, what would you like to do with it, yada yada yada. There's a Tire review thread in the Product review area that can be very helpful with some reviews from people on here that have purchased and are using them in their climates.

It's an automatic with 194,000KMs on it. I'll get more pictures once I get my camera back, I came down with the flu last night of all things and nobody wants me near them haha, at least my girlfriend is headed over to take care of me haha that's always good :) As for the tires I'll be checking that thread for sure, thanks for the lead :)

Also, Even though you're in B.C. were most places don't use salt on the roads like all the other provinces, you may want to check a couple of HOT spots that these rigs hit pretty badly in. In the rear wheel well there's a couple of holes you may want to poke your finger in and feel around. These frames eat themselves from the inside out and that area being the worst spot. Good to get on top of it before it gets out of control. There's a few other important things you need to attend too as well, like timing belt change if it's unknown when it was last serviced, and if its an auto tranny, then an external transmission cooler to bypass the stock on as it is prone to clogging. All of this information is here on these forums. You wont find a more comprehensive guide to pathfinder ownership out there in the world.

I was under the truck at the local shop to take a look around at everything last Saturday, and the frame looked in really good shape (from the outside), I didn't think to check inside of it... The catalytic converter had rust holes straight through it, looked original. So it failed the AirCare that you must know of... Anyhow I put a new cat on and the ratings went higher! So I have a buddy in mission who had a spare cat kind of halfway in between the new one and the old one... rusted but no holes... put that on the truck and it passed aircare. Weirdest thing ever man. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to reset the computer or not with a new cat. Nevertheless it passed now so I got 2 years to figure that out. As for the timing belt and all the other longer-mileage changes, I have no idea when those were done so I might as well start getting them changed so I know for sure.

Lastly. looking at the scenery in your pictures makes me miss BC. I spent 6 years there and there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss living there. Even the Pissy rain that isn't enough to call a storm but annoying enough to keep you wet. I'd take it all in a heartbeat if I could.

Yeah BC is a great place, I'm headed to Alberta for a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship in late summer. I'll be missing it too... And the winters that are so warm that you can wear shorts outside in the snow...

Thanks for the welcome and some good tips on where to start checking this truck over for preventitive maintenance!

  11. Oh yeah, I do have some pictures of my old 87' nissan se-v6 truck, i sold it to get the pathy. the truck was kind of a beater haha, either way the pics might be interesting to y'all until I get more of the pathy
