  1. ....I've heard of all kinds of things some guys do as a temporary fix, like using bar soap to eliminate the squeek.....

Bar soap? Sounds like it'd just make the belt slip just as a belt dressing would....

WOW! That really takes me back! We used to use this temporary fix on our squeeling V-belts back in the early seventies. Don't know WHY it works, but it does...for several days anyway. Agree that you need to do it the right way, though.

  2. I'm currently going through the exact same problem. I have replaced my gas cap with an OEM from my local Nissan Stealership and cleared the code with my code reader. Just a day later the same P1440 code came back. Also, I have detected a strong smell of gasoline when I park after a short trip into town. Using my sniffer, I have detemined that my problem is not from the gas filler area. I'm 90+% sure that my problem is with the canister filter behind the driver side rear wheel. If I figure this thing out before you I'll be sure to post the remedy here. Other wise, I'll keep a close eye on your report.

I had this exact issue last year with the same code and everything. I also was convinced the smell was from the canister, but the dealer said it was the due to the known recall of the faulty filler neck. Is your Pathy from any of the list states? http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/results.cfm?SearchType=QuickSearch&rcl_ID=07V435000&summary=true

The fix only took an hour & no problems since..

  3. So, I am driving my 2000 SE (3.3) along the highway today for about an hour or so and suddenly all my dash instrumentation (including the cruise control & compass) quits working! Several of the gauges just freeze at whatever position they had been at, like the speedometer and gas gauge....others (like the tachometer & temperature gauge) just drop down to zero. Everything else on the vehicle works just fine. All lights operate, engine runs as normal, all other electrical is OK.

I pull over and shut it off for about 15 minutes and when I start it again, all gauges are now working as normal. Drive along for another half-hour and it does the same thing again. Repeat endlessly throughout the day.

I'm thinking that possibly a relay somewhere is overheating? Am I off base?
