  1. i've been using premium for at least a year but lately gas prices have been killing me. i don't have the manual; what does it say about the kind of gasoline we should use? is it okay to use the low-graded gasoline? edit: is there really no poll option on these forums?
  2. turning on the AC heats up my 93 pathy almost immediately. turning it back off returns it to normal operating temperature. also, there is a small puddle of dark purple oily substance near the base of my radiator. autotransmission oil dipstick shows a good level. what's going on? thanks in advance.
  3. i swear.. no one has this damned hose. what's the diameter of this hose? and what two parts does it connect? and how tall is it? for example, in this bypass hose, it is 4 1/2" tall. if i can't find it locally, i'll just order the part mentioned in the previous post. the price went up though. =/
  4. ^ thanks everyone. especially slick!! and oh yah, i meant the smell gets worse when i open the window and the car is moving... that's weird cause i thought i'd get the clean air blowing inside. it probably is that boot. i'll have a look. @ slick
  5. rails? what rails?! where are they located? how do they look like? ah!!!!!!!!!! i'm reading as much as i can in the chilton manual. hopefully i can understand everything you guys are talking about. i even had to look up what "petcock" was... jeez!
  6. my gosh. how do i check the floor vents? take off the chair? how about those boots? remove the shell that encases the parking break? i'm such a noob. as for the pipe, i'm not sure what "pipe" you're talking about (cause i'm a noob =( ) if your talking about the exhaust at the rear or the pathy, i don't think it was ever modified. when i open the windows for some ventillation, the smell gets worse; it goes away after the car gets warm or after about 15 minutes of driving.
  7. my engine was overheating because coolant leaked from my torn bypass hose (http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=7404&st=0). the result was smoke under the hood . i believe the smoke was from the burning coolant over the engine cause the smoke didn't smell like anything. anyways, the smoke was able to travel into the car while i was driving (only then did i notice the overheating) from the handle brake. why? this might have to do with why that same area radiates alot of heat during long periods of driving; and why i smell gas when i start the car in cold conditions (even when the windows are shut). i appreciate your help everyone!
  8. what exactly do i have to remove in order to get a clear view of the bypass hose like in your pictures? for example, i also noticed that your radiator fan is missing. so i don't have to take out the engine block? sorry for being such a noob. i have mechanic friends that are helping me on this.
  9. wow, this forum is extremely helpful! hey slick, i'm a relatively new to this stuff (actually, i only know basic preventative maintanance). how does one begin to replace the bypass hose? for example, does it require that the whole engine block needs to be taken out? i made a post (with pics) about this just today and the repliers told me about you and this thread... the thread is here: http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?showto...mp;#entry288780
  10. thanks! i did a search and found the thread...
  11. my 93 nissan pathfinder leaks radiator fluid. luckily the diagnosis was only a slit radiator hose located here: i called pepboys for a replacement hose, and they asked me if i'm looking for the "top" or "bottom" radiator hose... i'm not sure. which one is it? thanks everyone.
  12. thanks everyone for the quick replies =D. gonna check all fuses first. afterwards, i will check the alternator by first jump starting the car, and then disconnecting the battery's negative pole from the chassis. is this a good idea? and it's odd that the car was able to run after a jumpstart while the battery had an extremely small amount of power left. so maybe the alternator is working but not giving enough juice. this is probably why the battery was able to charge to 2 on the voltmeter after the car ran for an hour. looks like i'll have to look for weak connections or a loose alternator belt. my 4th or 5th post and i love this forum already! oh yah, i love the chilton's manual too! i'm a novice at repair (and kind of ok at maintenance) so wish me luck!
  13. I was having problems starting the SUV (1993 Nissan Pathfinder) with an old battery. So I replaced the battery with a used, but fully charged battery (checked with a voltmeter). With this battery, the car was fully functional for a day of driving and turning on/off. The next day, the battery was completely discharged--no clock, no nothing--and the voltmeter reading was 0.4--dead. So I jump started the car. Immediately afterwards it died when I put the car on drive (I wanted to move it). I jump started the car a 2nd time, left everything alone, and let it run for an hour. I came back afterwards, and turning the key to open the passenger side door turned off the engine. I checked the battery with the voltmeter and it managed to charge to about 2. What is going on?! I appreciate your help in advance--and happy holidays!
  14. thanks again. how much do you think the materials alone will cost?
  15. i've just realized now that this may be a problem. there is alot of heat radiating between the driver's and passenger's side seats (where the hand brake is). what do you guys suppose it is? thanks in advance!
