  1. Your 265's rubbed on the bottom of the front coil spring because of the wheel offset, not the lack of lift. You either need to replace the wheels with 16x8 that have a maximum of 4.25" backspacing or you need to install wheel spacers.

    They are stock rims.

Are there any other wheels I can get from a salvage shop off another brand that have the proper back spacing?

Or can any tire shop install wheel spacers?

    Thx

  2. I have an '02 XE and tried installing 265/75/16 and where it rubbed was against the front coil spring!! I'm afraid the 265/70 won't be much better.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Seem like 255 is the largest I'll be able to go without lifting the truck.

  3. Definitely go with the OME springs all around, it handles a load better, and rides better unloaded IMO. Less lean in the corners, and better control over rough surfaces. I paired mine with extended length Bilstein 5100s out back, and I couldn't be happier. Stock I could hit rough washboards at 35, now with the Bilsteins, I can comfortably do 50-55 all day with complete control. Check out my build thread for more details, and my impressions.

    Hey Thanks

That's one awesome build you have there, but a but too rich for my needs.

I'm going with OME Springs all around. But not sure if I can get HD for front and rears. Any suggestions on where to purchase these?

Also, for shocks, the Bilsteins 5100 sound reasonable and I think are cheaper than the OME. But what did you use for struts and did they top on out bumbs?

Finally, I do need bigger tires and was thinking the 265/70/R16 BFG A/T KO2, but it seems like I'll need some lift to get them to fit properly. The lift will also help with the bigger pay load. But since the OME springs already give .5" lift, shouldn't a 1" lift suffice?

Thanks for any suggestion on where to get parts too. I'm here in Canada and prefer to buy without hoping across border, but either works.

    Cheers

  4. If you're looking to clear that specific tire size you should do the 1.75" OME or the 2" AC lift, these will also drastically improve your carrying capability over stock but allow you to clear that size tire. I have the medium duty springs (nobody makes HD rear springs for the R50) front and rear on my 01 with 255/70/16's and needed to reshape the corners of the inner fender liners, it would slightly rub while turning in reverse.

That's interesting, because on my '01 with the OME coil springs I had absolutely no rubbing with the 255/70/16 and thought I could even get away with the 265s, which is why I was inquiring.

But I'll look into the 1.75" OME lift if that will improve my carrying capacity.

    Thx,

  5. Struts and shocks have little to no bearing on load handling. Thats what the springs do. Depending on the situation you have a cpl choices. Swap springs with a stiffer rate. Meaning it takes more force to compress it. Also you can buy some that sit taller offering some lift making the distance to bottom out further. Air bags in the rear may offer you the best result. You add air to carry the bigger load and once thats done simply let the air out and its back to stock. If your drucks due for shocks do it at the same time. Any quality part will do but dont go cheap. I prefer kyb myself. Used tgem on all my cars for years. I myself am a huge guy. 6'3 and 345. I carry a ton of gear and three kids offroading. I bottom out some but never at any speed or id add bags to my pathy. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, beefier springs is my first go to. I think I'll go with the Heavy Duty OME there.

But, truck's due for shocks, so I'll do them at the same time. Any brand you recommend?

Struts seem ok, but if I'm doing everything else, might as well I figure. Probably KYB there.

As for airbags, I know that on my other truck carrying a camper, air bags add too much roll when going off road. I don't want that, so I didn't even consider them as an option for the Pathy.

    Thx

  6. I'm sure this has been covered dozens of times, but I'm just trying to upgrade the suspension of an '02 Pathfinder 5spd to carry more load without bottoming out (taking fat clients to paragliding launch sites off road). The roads we use are pretty rough so the truck takes quite a beating.

I understand OME now makes complete kits for the pathfinder but not sure if it's worth the extra $$. Can I get by something cheaper as far as struts and shocks go, or are should I just bit the bullet and get the OME?

    Thx

  7. Passed on that one and bought a 2002 5spd instead with a new clutch and no rust and 155k miles for $3000.

Now it's time to start working on the suspension and tires but I don't want to any lift

    1. KYB Struts GR-2,
    2. HD OME coil springs front& rear
    3. Shocks, haven't decided between Rancho RS999010/XL or Bilsteins or ?)
    4. Warn manual locking hubs.
    5. BFG A/T 265/70/16

  8. Hi

    I'm looking at a 2003 5spd Pathfinder with 160k miles for $4000.

It has the original clutch and that's my main worry as I know it can be expensive replacing these and they tend to go right around 150k.

    A couple of questions:

Is this a decent price for this vintage vehicle with this many miles and original clutch?

Anything else I should be looking at?

    Thx

  10. Hello

I'm in the market for a new truck and am looking at opinions on an Xterra (2nd gen or newer) vs a Pathfinder 01-04, manual tranny.

My main use will be taking clients with heavy paragliding gear off road so I need something with good rear suspension so it doesn't bottom out. I believe both Xterra and Pathfinder stock rear suspensions are too mushy for that, but not sure which is easier to modify and beef up. OME makes beefier springs for the pathfinder that are reasonable.

Also, which has the better reliability record? I know the 3.5L V6 engine in the '01-'04 Pathfinder is very reliable.

Currently, money is not an issue. I just need the right truck for the job and don't want to settle on something that won't work. I'm even contemplating getting a relatively new Xterra Pro 4x if it will do the job. But not sure how much I'd have to mod it so it doesn't bottom out off road with a heavy load.

    Thx for your replies,
    Raz

  11. Hi guys,

Quick question on tire sizes for a stock PF.

Mine is a 2001 3.5L manual with KYB Struts and OME springs

    No real lift.

I've got 16" wheels and am getting some BFG AT. Without cutting, can I run 265/70 R16 size tires, or do I need 255/70 R16?

Also, if they don't rub on the road, will they rub off road with all the jarring going on?

    Thx,

    Raz

  12. That is true...the model is RS999010XL I believe (I have posted it in other threads since I found out this info). It is listed for a Dodge Durango, but it fit on bnoth my 97 and 01 with no problems. The 97 you just need to cut down one of the sleeves and use an assortment of the washers they provide. The 01 used less washers, but the fitment on the lower mount is much tighter, however I could still get them on without a rubber mallet or anything else...

OK, so the Rancho Shocks do fit on the 2001 Pathy. However, I wouldn't recommend them.

I changed my full suspension system based on the recommendations here: OME coil springs, KY-B Struts, and Rancho Shocks.

The Rancho shocks, while adjustable, seem definitely too compressed with the truck unloaded. If I were to do it again, I'd be inclined to something else.

  13. the oil like coating is exactly what causes damage to the MAF sensor. an OEM nissan filter is just a paper filter. it's common knowledge that K&N filters (or any filter that uses oil) can cause damage to MAF sensors if you overspray the oil and/or don't let the filter dry thoroughly before reinstalling it.

Actually, I followed the mechanics advice and bought an OEM air filter from Nissan today.

He was right, compared to my after-market filter, it definitely has a very slight oil like coating on it.

I've never seen or tried a K&N but this OEM filter is definitely different than a simple after-market filter which is plain paper.

There's probably a happy medium somewhere between a thicker oil coating and none at all, and the OEM strikes it.

  14. This might be old news, but I did a search and came up empty.

I was recently talking to a ex-Nissan Mechanic who was master rated at one point.

I have a 2001 Pathifinder and he said that he highly recommends I get an original Nissan air filter. After 10 years of working for Nissan, he said, that 9/10 cars who came in with sensor problems had after-market air filters in them. Apparently the original Nissan air filters have an oil like coating on the paper which does a much better job of filtering air.

They are only marginally more expensive than after-market air filters and can save your sensor.

  15. Save your self the time and money. Get the HD coils you will be much happier. I have had both and I would never say get the MD. There is no difference between the coil spring rates of either, the HD coils are just a bit longer so they give you a bit more lift on the front end. I ran into the same problem when I was trying to purchace them the first time. I ended up having to replace the MD with the HD.

As for the spacers it is a preference.

As for the camber bolts you dont need them with the OME lift.

    This is great info. Thanks.

Since I don't ever plan on having a winch or heavy bumper and don't necessarily need more lift, what are the advantages of the HD other than more lift?

Considering the HD coils give you more lift, would they make the chance of topping out the struts on speed bumps more likely?

    Thx again,

    Raz

  16. Hi guys,

I've got a 2001 pathfinder that I'm getting lifted with OME coils, KYB Struts and Rancho 9000XL shocks.

I'm also installing the Warn manual locking hubs and new OEM strut mounts and bearings.

I haven't decided between the OME HD and Medium Duty coils as I'm getting conflicting advice from the ARB tech and various forums.

    Question for you guys:

    1. What are the pros and cons of the HD vs. Medium front OME coil springs?

    2. Do I need strut spacers for either of these?

    3. What are camber alignment kits? Where do I get them and do I need them?

    Thanks,

    Raz
