SC88Pathy
I have the weirdest problem (not really a problem, but an oddity). My parking/emergency brake will turn on sometimes during right turns. Only on right turns never left, and then only sometimes. I know the e brake isn't engaging (that would be kinda cool though, get to do e brake turns everywhere -bounce- ). Any ideas as to why this is happening?
mws
I'll venture a couple guesses... The light comes on when the switch is activated, and the switch is mounted somewhere on the brake handle. I don't have a schematic near me, but I would guess it would be a ground switch so there is only one wire to run down to the switch. I'd bet: 1) The wire is slightly pinched somewhere and the insulation is cut through, but the copper conductor is very close but not quite touching a piece of metal right next to it. When turning right, something flexes a tiny bit, just enough to make the conductor touch which provides a ground path for the indicator light. 2) The switch is loose or misadjusted. Placing my $.02 bet on 1).... Edited March 23, 2005 by mws
jj big shoe
On my '87, the brake light comes on when the fluid gets too low. Maybe the sensor is on the right side of the reservoir. Pop the hood and check the fluid level.
88pathoffroad
That's not just an e-brake light. It is the main brake system warning light. Your brake fluid level is low. Check it before you run out!
NZ Terrano Owner
If the fluid is low, find out why! There must be a leak somewhere. I doubt it has evaporated.
Mr. Pickles
Definately check! Losing your brakes is a BAD THING. If you're not sure what to look for, take it to a chain brake shop, as most will do an inspection for free. Sure, they may try and get you for bogus stuff, but they most likely will also find the problem. Then, if they're reasonable and its something you don't want to mess with, let them do it. If not, have at it on your own and consider it their fault for trying to screw you. Edited March 23, 2005 by Mr. Pickles
SC88Pathy
I'll check the brake fluid level later on today after my classes are over, I'll post findings later.
jj big shoe
It might be the rear drum brake cylinder if you have rear drum brakes. That's where mine is leaking from. I've had to top the reservior off twice last year. One more thing to fix when I get time...
SC88Pathy
Checked fluid level, it's not low but it's not full either. It's about halfway between low and max. I'll top it off just in case.
Mookie
Checked fluid level, it's not low but it's not full either. It's about halfway between low and max. I'll top it off just in case. It doesn't take much of a drop in fluid level to trigger the light. Topping it off should do it.
SC88Pathy
Topped off the brake fluid yesterday, and the light hasn't come on since. Thanks for the help.
