green180
A friend and I installed the carrier I had sitting in my garage, it's off a 1997 but it fit perfect, I'm looking for ideas to reinforce it more
Yendor
Nicely done. I was thinking of doing this myself. How sturdy is it? I would like to mount a 31 and a gas can or two.
green180
I put my weight on it with it open and it didn't sag, I want to add more bracing though before I add a tire and gas can
Precise1
Looks good! Hard to get a reference for the back bracing, and I haven't looked at that part of the car, so I don't have any good suggestions... B
01Pathmaker
Did you make those plates? Very nicely done. Looks like you've thoroughly sandwiched the mounting area, from a fabrication/structural integrity stand point, I don't think it could get better without tying the upper and lower mounts together on the backside with one solid backing plate, but I think that would be extremely difficult and overkill. green180
Thank you, I made those plates as close as I could to the shape of the quarter panel, I'm thinking of attaching both plates I'm just waiting on more time I would've liked to hole saw a hole in the second layer of the c pillar and weld a pipe to both layers for more strength, I worry that over time the panel will crack around my plates
bushnut
looks good to me, my only advice would be to water proof the hell out of it. so you don't get any corrosion down inside that area.
green180
Haha thanks bushnut, I did, I ended up using window sealer silicone in between the carrier and body, same with the latches
ahardb0dy
Should have used either lock washers or Nylock nuts on the inside to prevent the nuts from loosening, good job otherwise.
Nefarious
That's pretty much exactly what I did when I added a carrier to my wd21. 4 years later now and still no issues at all and it's been carrying a 33x12.5 tire. My backing plates are slightly thicker gauge steel but it really shouldn't matter, yours are ample, it's just what I had laying around.
green180
Thanks nefarious, eventually ill install lock washers, the 2 inside nuts are welded on, on both brackets, it's tough to get my hands in there so I did that instead
ahardb0dy
Don't see any welds, that's why I commented, welding the nuts to the bracket would work.
ferrariowner123
Love the handy work. I should really pop open my rig and see just what nissan has put back there, for strength. Maybe it's fairly simple, I feel like looked once when Andy was putting his swing away on, anyway, if I'm bored today, I'll grab some shots. -Kyle
green180
That would be awesome I've been wondering what's back there, please do
hawairish
Curious to know, too. I see the different parts numbers for the fender depending on if fender flares and the tire carrier were included. Definitely doesn't appear to be an extra, separate bracket of any sort. Still, your approach is probably sufficient. Are your plates bonded to the metal in any way, like JB Weld?
green180
No just window sealant and bolts, I haven't heard any noises yet and it's still sturdy, we'll see once I take it off road with all the flexing
