Drifter2090
Hey, I have a 93 TD27 RHD and when I start up the truck, I have to keep pumping the diesel pump until the engine is warm (even in the summer, but I have to pump less), If I do not pump it the engine the idle jumps around then the truck stalls. I have tried changing the whole diesal filter unit (including the hand pump) and the problem persists. Once the engine is warm It usually runs fine and doesn't stall. I heard maybe it could be the glow plugs? so I tried the multimeter test (set to 200) and all the plugs said 1.2, is this good or bad?. Anyone know what the problem is? Slartibartfast
I don't know diesels that well, but from what I've read, the glow plugs only do their thing when you're starting the engine. Sounds more like a fuel delivery issue (weak pump, leaky regulator?).
Terranovation
How long does it take for the glow plug light to go out? It should be something like 5 - 7 seconds when cold, 1 - 2 seconds after warm up. To me the problem sounds fuel pump related, not fuel filter related. Try draining the fuel pump, there should be a plastic valve underneath the pump that you can turn, it has a small hose attached to it. Put a little container like a coke bottle under it and drain the fuel pump. Then investigate what comes out. There might be dirt or water in the fuel. After draining, actuate the primer again.
Terranovation
Oh and one more thing, look at your rear window for oily residue, fuel splatter marks. When the fuel pump leaks, somehow I don't know why, the fuel that drips can end up on the rear window. This is exactly what happened to mine so that's another thing to look for.
MattV
You have a lot of grey smoke on cold start ups? It could be that your glow plugs aren't warming up the pre chambers enough to ignite the diesel. Maybe your compression is too low making cold starts harder too. You could send your TD27 to me in the states and I'll trade you my VG30e for it. slide
" I have to keep pumping the diesel pump until the engine is warm" I presume you mean primer pump on top of fuel filter? If so you've probably got a leaking fuelpump. Go get you local diesel specialist to check it out, of if you want to DIY do some searching on how to test it out Edited July 5, 2014 by slide
Drifter2090
Thanks for help, I checked the fuel filter today and its seal was pretty destroyed so air was getting in, so I removed the filter and put a clear tube there and noticed that there were still air bubbles, is this the fuel pump then?? Terranovation
The diesel fuel SHOULD remain in the lines yes. Otherwise you have air in your fuel system.

This is a clip of start-up and shutdown, we put some clear tubes here to see the fuel. Is this normal? https://www.dropbox.com/s/e691vn2krwc08k4/2014-07-17%2020.31.52.mp4
