SpeedyGreeney
Hey all- I've done some serious thinking over the past few weeks and I need a project. Something to keep me busy. I actually had a trade lined up for a 6" lifted YJ Wrangler.. unfortunately it fell through, but it sparked a certain interest me. I've been exploring the option of installing coil spacers, throwing on some black steel rims, along with some big ol' tires. But, I don't have a lot of cash to throw in. I was thinking of selling certain things off of the Pathy (OEM 17" LE's, running boards, cargo cover, etc.) to bring some cash in. So here's my question: is all of it reasonable? I haven't found an R50 classifieds forum that brings a good audience, so that's a worry. Also just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have any troubles with the lift/tires rubbing. Yes they're treadwright tires, but it's semi-cheap and my buddies have had great experiences with them. Here's what I have been looking at: Rims: 15" Pro Comp Rock Crawlers Series 97- http://www.4wheelparts.com/Wheels/Series-97-15x8-with-5-on-4-5-Bolt-Pattern-Gloss-Black.aspx?t_c=11&t_s=209&t_pt=100021&t_pn=pcw97-5865&utm_source=google&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=product&emlprox=out&ppcfon=1&gclid=CP-1iKmGrLwCFVFk7AodvDEAAA ~Paired with~ 31/10.5/R15 Guard Dog's - https://www.treadwright.com/p-117-31x10-50r15-guard-dog-m-t-b2b-c.aspx OR 16" Summit Racing 85 Black Series- http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-85-6883/overview/ ~Paired with~ 265/75/R16 Guard Dog's - https://www.treadwright.com/p-71-265-75r16-guard-dog-m-t-c.aspx OR 285/75/R16 Guard Dog's - https://www.treadwright.com/p-55-285-75r16-guard-dog-m-t-d-non-b2b-clearance-item.aspx I found 2" coil spacers that would run me about $140. Any input would be appreciated, as I have very little experience dealing with suspension and rubbing issues. Thanks! cvdloc
I agree with the pro comp rims, my friends ride them and they will be my first choice if I don't go with bead locks.

SpeedyGreeney
Probably going to go with the 16" rims... still uncertain about the tires though. I've done plenty research, but I can't find anything specific enough to ease my mind. With 2" coil spacers, could I safely run the 32"s? Wouldn't trust myself with having to trim and mess with the fenders and what not
Karmann
Good choice on the 16s. 15s require some caliper trimming anyway. To be completely honest with you, for the look I assume you're going for, meaning clean, I think you should keep your stock rims and throw some nice ATs on there (BFG ATs would be a good look) in an uprated size, and lift it maybe 1" with the spacers. This is still a cheap option IMO, and other than one member who had some legitimate JDM wheels on his pathy, I tend not to like the non-factory rims. Craigslist is a good source for tires and 17s are a common size among Jeeps etc. You could always buy a set of toyota rims and tires as a package and call it a day, if you were looking for a change, and still keep that cleanly look. While you are switching tires, you could always have the current rims powder-coated in something like gunmetal grey. Just throwing some thoughts at you
SpeedyGreeney
UPDATE: I have ordered the coil spacers and 16" Soft 8 rims. Only thing left is the tires. Going with 265/75/16, just need to figure out which ones. Again re-treads are fine... I've put 11k miles on the pathy over the span of almost 2 years so I'm not too worried about it . Both M/T and A/T are options. I know it's not recommended on a DD in the city but I'm a sucker for that M/T tread. If anyone has any suggestions for under $500 I'm all ears. drewp29
Treadwrights are good tires. I've made some comments about them here and there in the forums. I've put around 14k miles on my Sentinels and they haven't lost much tread at all. The Guard Dogs are widely regarded and a buddy of mine runs them on his 4Runner and swears by them. If you are mainly pavement pounding they are quite loud, but any M/T tread is. Their A/T tire is called the Watchman now I think, but it's the same tread as the Sentinel that I run. I don't have a lot of experience off-road with them, but they hook up quite nicely on snow an ice. Looks like a good plan! Edit: I would add some manual hubs into the mix, for the CV relief as well as the improved gas mileage. I went with the 265/75/R16s and with the manual hubs I think I broke even on the gas mileage. The car also feels MUCH lighter and accelerates better with the hubs unlocked. The Treadwrights will measure out at pretty much 32" diameter, even though the 265/75/R16 would say they are under that. Be prepared to trim and mod the wheel well/front bumper. It won't take an extreme amount, but it will take a bit to get things out of the way and prevent rubbing, especially turning at full lock. Rick13
Sorry if I missed it, but just be careful of the backspacing of the rims to make sure they push the wheel out far enough from the strut to clear the 32" tire. 31's typically fit without issue (from my experience), but if you are planning on 32" equivalent tires I was afraid not to mention it.

kdj
I've said this before but people always ask about size. I have '98 it had 265/70/15 stock. Replaced with 31" X10.5"-15" that fit with lots more room. That's with a 2" backspace. I probably could have gone bigger but I may not be done yet! Backspacing on the rims are 3.975. If the 32"s with the 2 inch coil spacers don't look too ridiculous, I'm willing to invest in some 1.5" wheel spacers for the fronts. SpeedyGreeney
Progress has been made Rims, tires, and coil spacers are in. Just need to borrow my buddy's floor jack and spring compressors and put everything together. I also jacked up the car and test fitted the rims... mud flaps are going to have to come off to prevent some rubbing. Plasti-dipped the center caps matte black... don't really like it, I'll be taking it off.
