Please calm my nerves, diff oil change, magnet full.

So i changed my diff fluid after scoring 6 quarts of 75w-90 mobil 1, LSD safe for $12!!!

Came at the right time, because it was locking under low speed turns and felt like a welded diff at times.

But the oil came out relatively clean, (compared to the milky stuff that i've seen on other cars, lol) but my main concern is what i found on the diff drain magnet,

Now im sure the little stuff is nothing to worry about, its grinding metal on metal in there, so a little bit of metal shouldn't be anything to cry over.

But this chunk has me slightly worried, here is a closer, clean pic

So im basically looking for someone to tell me its just part of a clutch disc and ill let it go. lol

does't look like a spider gear does it? Hard to tell... that's what the diff in the 88 i used to ahve did, was like a rachet rear end around corners and eventually got worse to where it snapped and popped at low speed turns. i have pics somewhere. something like 5 spider gear teeth snapped before i took it apart

That's one knackered diff. I'd expect to find more stuff on the magnet from a rear end that knackered, though.

How do the sides of that little piece look? I'd expect a piece of a friction disk to be smooth on both sides, whereas a chip from a gear tooth or something would be rough on one side. I would also expect a clutch chunk to be of uniform thickness.

Given the radius on the edge, my money's on clutch chunk.

I would be worried...very, very worried! Lol. Just messin' with ya. As an former Indy Car Gearbox specialist, I'd say it looks like part of the clutch pack starting to let go.

It's obviously not going to heal itself by changing the gear oil, or even the type. How many miles are on your truck?

The gear oil that came out my not have been compatible with a LSD, and started the problem?

If it's a chunk of metal, than most likely the start of a spider gear failure...

Those spider gears pictured above are not from Ferrariowner123, those are from Kyle94 just showing how his own broken diff looked for comparison and I think the little sliver of metal that the diff magnet picked up looks a lot like one of that shattered disc of Kyle94s in the center. The length and width of it, and the texture all look identical because you wouldn't get a little tiny piece of metal from one of those big chunky spider diff gears, either big broken pieces or tiny metal shavings.

Button it up and roll it! If it makes any noises or acts strangely, time to start sourcing a replacement rear axle ot internals, but I'll bet you are fine for a while.

I too am curious about the wear/shear marks on the one piece...

If the noise changes, it can mean a lotm, especially when Nissan gears don't whine unless there is an issue. This ain't no Chebby were talking aboot.

Good measurement/pictures! :aok:

That looks too small to be part of a spider gear as they are tapered and this seems to be univerally flat, almost like a bit of a washer or friction plate. I can't say why it broke off or what it means, but I stand by my initial advice. Drive it, just pay attention for a bit...

Yeah, i was fairly sure it wasn't a spider either, it had fairly clean looking fluid in both diffs, just the LSD wasn't happy.

Thanks for the help guys, I've been driving her recently and its seems fine. haven't checked to make the LSD is working, but i have my ways with the rainy seasons coming, :wiggle:

Now that looks like part of a friction disc from the clutch pack or perhaps a piece of a thrust washer? Is it solid metal, or metal with friction material on it?

It feels smooth on both sides, but what should a clutch disc feel like?

You would see a thin layer of brake pad type material or a spot where something was obviously bonded and pulled off unless it was completely worn over. That finish looks too uniform, more like a forging or heat treat surface. The surface there it obviously broke, is it grainy like a casting or more smooth and torn/twisted?
