You're joking, right?! Sounds like an open invitation to a full vehicle and passenger search at the least out here on the left coast. I can't speak for the states inbetween, but I'd stash that sooo quick out here, lest you get shot or just escorted to the anal probe check area.

Pretty much along I-40, until you get into Cali, you'll be fine. You'll be running through NC, TN, AR, OK, TX, NM, and AZ....those states are very liberal when it comes to gun control policy. As long as it has a trigger lock and is unloaded, and registered, you'll be fine with it.

I made that drive along I-40 in reverse last year, and had no problems with any of the states and my handguns. Though, I didn't get pulled over either, so...

i know here in cali you have to stop at ALL scales with ANY size rental trucks, loaded or not.. so keep your eyes on the signs..... especially loaded, more n likely you will have to everywhere

In most states you don't have to stop at the scales in a rental truck that doesn't require you to have a CDL to drive. In other states it's about whether you keep a log book or not. You don't have to worry about either, but it wouldn't hurt to get a CB and ask truckers about the scales as you get ready to deal with them.

Truckers call California, Commifonia because of all the weird trucking laws and crap.

Have a safe trip and get plenty of sleep on the road.(While stopped)

made it all in one piece...in NC they told me I had to stop at all scales...after OK there were no scales open so that was no big deal...I was so freaking pissed off when I hit CA and trucks or auto's with a trailer can only do 55 which I could only take that for about an hr then it was up to 64 which I still got blown off the highway (or freeway) by most trucks and a bunch of F250's pulling huge boats...

now i've got to get the truck unloaded b4 the gf gets home to hide all the parts that i wasnt suppossed to bring with me shes gonna :stickwack: me :/

made it in about 36 hrs 2 days of 14 hrs and 1 day of 8hrs

ohh yea...I've always respected truck drivers on the roads but after the drive I respect them more b/c I didn't know how many people actually didn't give them room and/or care/knowledge that the truck can not stop like a car and could very easily kill them...as 1 couple from Nevada learned when I signal to get over and you decide that not only do you want to change lanes with me but you also feel the need to accelerate to keep me from coming over and trying to pass I'm coming anyways...now granted if they wouldnt have reacted to the pathy coming over on top of them I would have let them pass but they had the expected results and let me in...

also 31" tires are the MAX that the tire straps will fit around for the Penske trucks and thats barely getting them to fit...i had to pull the cotter pins and rear straps then loop it over the tire and pull it down to get the rod back through the straps...

good experience...the only thing is I didnt take any pictures really...its amazing seeing the landscape change all the way across the country

welcome to cali! not sure how drivers are around the rest of the country, but there are A LOT of morons out here, couple that with the huge load of a$$hole drivers (ie those who speed up when you turn the signal on and the like) and you've got a lot of bad pilots on the roads out here.

but other than that cali's great.

your crazy dude, I got pulled over in oregon with 2 guns in the rig, one for hunting, one because. I also got pulled over with a 9mm on the seat. But it wasn't loaded and i informed the officer of its presence. its not illegal to carry a wepon if its registered. It is illegal to have a concieled weapon.

Callifornia is a different state, has some strange laws. But if your gun is unloaded durring driving hours and its registered, don't worry about it.

Besides, its not that bad in california.

I'm in SoCal I reckon (California City)

Do shotguns and riffles have to be registered in CA? In NC its not required for riffles, shotguns or handguns (pistol permit is required)...from what i gather from the CA site it doesnt have to be registered

There is no firearm registration requirement in California except for assault weapon owners and personal handgun importers. However, you may submit a Firearm Ownership Record to the DOJ for any firearm you own. Having a Firearm Ownership Record on file with the DOJ may help in the return of your firearm if it is lost or stolen. With very few and specific exceptions, all firearm transactions must be conducted through a firearms dealer.

I got pulled over with a buddy of mine and there were 3 shotty's on the rack behind the seat (regular cab pickup) and a box of shells under the seat but we let the officer know they were there and he told told my buddy to slow down a little bit so he didn't get a ticket and told us to have a good day...

depending on the officer they can get a lil hairy on their definition of concieled and unloaded (they tend to not like ammo and firearms in the same area)
