Shifting to other gears?

Yesterday we had 3-6" of snow/ice. I shifted to 4H but I don't know if I'm in 4H because I don't get an icon on my speedometer! Should I, and how do I know if my 4 wheels are being used? Thanks, folks!!!!!!

have a friend stand watch to see if your front shafts are spinning when you drive forward...You should also be able to tell because the steering becomes slightly more jittery, but if you don't know what you're feeling for I guess you wouldn't be able to tell. Or pull up to a curb, with your back tires on ice, if you climb it you're 4wd is working..if you sit and spin, it isn't.
