You know you drive a Pathfinder when EVERYONE calls it a 4runner, even though it isn't even a Toyota.

Real conversation between myself and some Corvette guy at a local car meet (Summer 2019):

"Nice, nice. Clean 4Runner! But what's with the back door handles?"

       "Haha no it's not a 4Runner, actually it's- "

"An Xterra?"

       "No."

"I'm lost..."

       "It's an old Pathfinder!"

"They made them that long ago!?"

       "Yep."

"Looks like a 4Runner."

       "Yep." ?

Story of R50 ownership right there... lol

im also from the sf bay area.

Sweet! I used to live in the Bay Area. Born in Chico up in the NorCal valley and lived there much of my life, but also had an apartment in the Gateway complex. Now I'm stuck in NorthEast Ohio due to location complications with my father's career ?

I visit rather often though, so if I'm ever in the area I might just have to hit you guys up ?

You’ll probably have to go to Western PA, WV or KY for off-road opportunities.

Yep, any sort of decent trails are hella hard to find around here unfortunately  ?

Having lived in Cleveland for 4+years in the late ‘90s, the salt there will eat a car alive.

Look 2014+ facelifted models (also when they switch from calling it the Trail Edition to the much more cumbersome & marketing influenced TRD Off-Road). It has the much better looking front chin & better headlights. I would also try & get one with KDSS though that’s going to be much harder. KDSS is like magic - stabilizes on road at speed & increases off-road articulation 10cm. Rarely a failure problem. Rust is much more of an issue on 4Runners than Pathfinders so I wouldn’t even bother looking in the rust belt.

Ah okay, I live in Medina if you know where that is, not far from CLE at all. Most of the solid models I've been eyeing were 2015-16s. Difficult to go any newer from a buget perspective (moving to a nicer apartment somewhat soon), but 2013 is my absolute age limit due to your exact point about rusting issues. KDSS is definitely on my ideal requirement list, but it also might mean going with a slightly older model to balance cost. Also looking online for cars in VA and NC.

an older pic of before i did my lights and other stuff. This was taken right after I did my AC springs and KYB shocks/struts and got my big 265/70/R16 tires on there. Just me messing around a bit and smilin' all big, putting the Q on a random rock lol

Looks great! It's crazy how unassumingly capable old Pathfinders and QX's are off road with some pretty basic modifications like small lifts, good tires, lockers, etc, so long as they're done right of course. Nice to see yet another smiling face enjoying an old R50  ?

Welcome to NPORA by the way!

Since the 4Runner Pro is actually the wrong choice (added cosmetics but can’t get KDSS & comes with a suspension you’ll want to change anyway - all for ~$5,000 more), you’ll find lots & lots of people putting Pro wheels on Off-Roads (the actual Pro wheel us 7” & you’re better off getting a custom 7.5-8” from the same manufacturer for the same or less). Anyway, it gluts the used market with Off-Road trim wheels. As you’ve said, way more so in places like CO, UT, WA, OR. I actually troll the KC & Asheville NC Craigslist market & the supply there is virtually non-existent. Used Toyota wheels are still the easiest to find but beware they take Mag Lugs, not Acorns & Toyota uses a different pitch than Nissan so expect to buy Nissan threaded Mag lugs.

Thanks for the info! Glad you said something, because knowing myself I probably wouldn't have thought of that until I ran into the problem  ?

That's also some really good consumer advice on the 4Runner. At some point within the next few years I'll need a second car, something I can daily. I have too much sentimental attachment to my Pathy (I know thats not a good thing, but it's not exactly something I can change) and having moved to Ohio, the salt is just tearing up the poor old girl. I want something similar to my Pathfinder but newer, so I've been looking at 2013-2016 TRD Off-Road 4Runners since clearly the newer Pathfinders are out of the question (it's a shame what they've done to it, really). Anyway, that's my tangent for today lol.

Yeah, I thought they all looked pretty good. The 5th Gen T4R TRD Off-Road wheels (7 spokes) are a dime a dozen around here as everyone replaces them with the TRD Pro wheels. I picked up a 4pack with new stock Dunlop ATs for $250.

Dang, that's a steal! I'll definetely have to look into those. Been considering getting a second set of wheels with more rugged tires to swap out for trails and harsh winters, but stock '99.5 SE wheels are almost impossible to find here in the midwest due to the rarity of any sort of R50s in the rust belt. And we have an abundance of 4Runners with TRD Pro wheels

I actually found a half decent '00 SE with the same stock wheels at a junk lot a while back, but I took too long to jump on it and the whole vehicle had sold within days (which is probably for the best, it had a little body damage but was running perfectly fine and probably shouldn't have been junked anyway). Since then I've been looking at some other various wheels from similar vehicles that might look good on the old girl and that would be easier to find and much cheaper. I've also considered those same FJ wheels before (a buddy of mine has an '11 FJ Cruiser and he let me try his spare stock wheels on the Pathy for a little while) but they looked a little off on my truck for some reason.

I think my Nissan & Toyota DNA are starting to mix!?! Or at least my girl stepped in something!

Hahaha that's awesome! You know, those SR5 wheels actually look pretty sick on the R50...  ;)

9. funny enough, you’re one of the closest members to me that isn’t a part of the midwest. I have family up in Michigan, maybe we can work something out over the summer!

If anything opens up in the Michigan area, let me know! I’m in Ohio so that would be totally doable for me.

Did anyone else’s truck dress up for Halloween?

I actually incorporated my Pathy into my Halloween decorating. I found a phantom-zombie looking guy in my basement to put in the drivers seat. Bought some red bulbs for the dome lights and rigged a fog machine to spray towards the headlights to get a nice spooky feel. I’m really bummed I didn’t get any pics of it, because it was pretty dang sweet!

As another data point- I have glass fogs on my '00 Pathfinder.

Very good to know. Snagged a set of plastic OEMs from Pull-A-Part for like $20 a couple days ago, but I might try to find a glass set in the future. Thanks everybody for all the info!

Interesting, so they clearly did make OEM glass fogs. I see your truck is a 1997, which should have the same fogs as my '99.5 Pathy. I wonder if the glass ones were reserved for QX4s? Also, would you by any chance consider selling that glass set?

13. Finally put in that fuel pump kill switch after weeks of procrastinating. Kill switch was sucessfully installed, however in the proccess I broke the overhead sunlgass compartment where I decided to put the switch. The hinge pins completely snapped off of the compartment door, and I can't quite figure out how to glue the peices back together whilst it's in position. Anybody know if there's any way to remove that whole overhead panel?

14. I've got glass fog lights on my 96 SE. I bought it new in Canada (Victoria) in 96, have done nothing to it since. Looking forward to lifting it over the next months.

On the fog lights, I have been wanting to replace them with LEDs. What have you all put up front to get some better lighting than the OEM fogs? For now I'd like to keep things simple, e.g. same electrical requirements, etc. if possible.

Yeah, from what I understand, most ‘96-‘99 models have glass fogs. Unfortunately the ‘99.5 facelift integrated the fog lights into the bumper, so they are a completely different shape than the pre-facelift R50s.

As for your LED upgrade, I would just replace the bulbs a opposed to the whole mountings. Assuming the glass lenses are thicker, you may also want to get thinner plastic lenses, but it all depends on how much you want to spend. If you do replace the mountings with plastic, make sure you don’t buy a cheap set like I did or they’ll be cracked and murky in a couple years.

15. Whatever is going on with these replies, take it to Facebook or Instagram or wherever else because that bull@!*% doesn't belong here.

joshualaw205 My 04 has OE glass fogs.  A p/n crossref shows fitment for 99-04 trucks.  I suggest hitting a junkyard or eBay for options.

LH: 26155-2W125 (full assembly, ~$182), 26159-2W100 (housing only, NLA)
RH: 26150-2W125 (full assembly, ~$182), 26154-2W100 (housing only, NLA)

You seem proud of the truck, but it seems like there's misinformation.  You've acquired followers hellbent on exploiting it, too.  I'm not one, but the bottom line is that there weren't factory or dealer options for a rear locker, front LSD, special tow wiring, suspension lift, nor extended range fuel tank for any Pathfinder, probably ever.  You could get an optional rear LSD, 4-pin trailer harness, and tire carrier on WD21 and R50, but that's about it.  Even when your truck was new, those other items may not have existed at the time even in the aftermarket (they hardly exist now), and no way Nissan nor a dealership was pioneering upgrades like those.  All US-destined R50s were made in Japan, so nothing unique there either.

If you're interested in learning about what the truck does have, this is a good community for that.  A "what is this?" or "is this stock?" thread may help answer some questions you (and apparently others) may have about your truck, but this thread isn't a good place for that sort of discovery.  Maybe there are some customizations on the truck that we can help identify.

@everyone else: Fellas, whether he's lying or misinformed, just offer information, insight, or correction and move on.  Call a guy out if you have to, but have some tact; this isn't FB or IG.  He seemed to have a genuine question about fog lights, and then things got stupid fast.  If you can't contribute, don't reply.

Thank you Hawairish,

I am fairly new to the Pathfinder community and do not understand too much about what did and did not come standard, as it was my father who bought the vehicle originally. I will admit to lying about a few things, but I will save that conversation for later as it is almost 1am where I live and I am very tired. But for the most part I myself am a bit confused on what all came standard with the truck and what was added on after the fact. Again, I’ll save this for later. I just want everybody to know that I am terribly sorry for all the drama and confusion I have caused.

It’s great to know that the latter model R50s do have available glass fog lights. I will have to check eBay and local junkyards for a set. Thanks for setting it all straight and actually leaving a helpful comment as opposed to a hateful one.

Have a great night, I hope to discuss some of this with everybody tomorrow when we’re all awake and fresh.

16. Hey guys, just wanted to say it would be cool if everyone kept chill. It's late right now and I've been working all day, but in the morning I'll probably censor a potty word here or there. Just don't want to see this go south and get a bunch of people in trouble.

Joshua, I'm in a a group chat that's been talking about this, seems like glass fog lights do exist. No idea what the correlation is to trim level, year, etc. May have to go to a local junkyard and poke around for glass ones. How bad was the wiring to add them by the way?

Thank you for getting the topic back on track LOL. That’s good to know, I didn’t think Nissan made glass OEM fog lights for R50s, but now that I know I’ll have to probe around to see if they will fit.

The installation was not terribly difficult. When it was time to work out the wiring, I got a bit lazy and just spliced them into the dash light fuse with a cheap little switch where the fog light wires split off. That way they still work with the headlight dial, but I don’t necessarily need to have my headlights on to use the fogs, I only need to have the dash lights on. Unfortunately the set of cheap plastic fog lights I bought three years ago or so when I did this were of a poor quality and cracked/aged very quickly, so last year I removed them and put the black plastic inserts back in. The wiring is all still there and I do miss having fog lights, so I wouldn’t be opposed to another, higher quality set of plastic lights, however glass would be preferred.

Thanks for all that you do!

They didn’t make glass OEM fogs. I just wanted to know if anybody was aware of a third-party glass upgrade.
