  1. Do you have them wired so that you can turn them on at any time as well as automatically triggering them in reverse? For me its kind of a must to be able to turn it on at will....
  2. Sweet, that's super helpful info. I'll look for those. I'm also putting in a separately wired reverse light, so hopefully I only drill one hole or can use one of those grommets.
  3. Thanks for the clarification. Nah, just two lights to add a little convenience lighting. No show truck lighting here
  4. Well, thanks for the confirmation on that @hawairish. Only other question is where you chose to access that wire? Is there one spot easier than the other, just curious. And I'm also assuming your pod's light up properly with the dome light without any problems haha
  5. I'll mention again what lights I'm planning to wire: two "rock lights" (pod style), .35A draw and 9W each
  6. I'd say its safe to assume you pods would tap more power from the system than my little lights, correct? Did you tap into the wire down below the dash, or access it somewhere else?
  7. Interesting......Correct. Just calling them rock lights out of not knowing what else to call them (and that happens to be the name of the products I'll be buying). Puddle lights is a much better word for it. But yeah, I want to be able to see ice and rocks and whatever else. I'm feeling pretty confident I can just tap into the existing wire, though.
  8. Oh, good point. I looked up what other people in different vehicles have done. I saw a jeep with 6 lights tapped into the existing dome wire and a silverado with 4 tapped into the existing wire. Also a guy who did two tacomas who said he did one with a relay, and the relay rattled and shut off mysteriously then came back on after a few weeks. The other truck he did led strips and rock lights on existing wiring with no issues. All the Jeep forums seem to have real confusion with wiring relays and lots of people have followed wiring diagrams only to not get the lights to work. My two LED's would be quite low amp draw, so I'm starting to reconsider a wiring splice.
  9. Not a problem in Idaho. Am I right to assume though that the light would not be as bright as usual, as it is with the dome light?
  10. I found two red and white wires next to eachother. There’s two open spots next to them for additional wires where on the harness that plugs into the smart entrance control unit.
  11. So, your concern is that the glowing dome light is indicative of the circuit not having enough power to run anything else off of?
  12. It is a soft glow though. I’m not sure how problematic it would be to have the lights barely on for 10 minutes after I leave my car.
  13. Alright, I'll look into that, see if I can find what you're talking about. As for the LED dome light, I have the same thing happen. It stays dimly lit, but within 5-10 minutes it fully shuts off.
  14. When you say body ECU, is that the same thing as the ECM? I see that on alot of diagrams, but no "ecu" per say. Its located somewhere by the steering column and the stereo.
  15. Alright. Ya I’ve definitely heard that using a relay is the right way to do this stuff. Thanks for both of your input! @Slartibartfast thanks for the video, and I’m going ahead with name brand LED’s with an IP69 rating.
  16. I was just hoping someone had tried something like this before. Guess I’ll be the first to know!
  17. Haha same, gonna start studying Civil engineering next year in college. Well thanks for the start, I’ll probably figure out the rest with my friend, who is much more electrically adept. I’ll keep the thread updated if I install this after all.
  18. I’ll probably just stick with tapping into the dome lights if I can. That or give up.thanks though
  19. Oh, right. Sorry, wiring is not my specialty (planning on having a buddy help me put this all together.) Thanks for the help
  20. Regardless of location, the important question is whether or not I can tap into the existing wire that goes to the dome light.
  21. True, though if I understand what you're saying, you still wouldn't have any light available when getting in the car. Also, I'm already going to have to go from the outside of the car to the inside with the reverse light, so I'm not sure how much more work it would save to keep the rock lights inside
  22. The idea is lighting up the ground when getting in and out of the vehicle. Some new cars come with a light that does this, so I wanted to see if I could rig my own setup
  23. Somewhere on the undercarriage (I’ve taken off the running boards)
