  1. My old truck had a small hole on the part of the cowl that faces inside the cab... Almost looked like someone had put a self tapper in there at one time, it was leaking and my floor would always be wet. The only way I found it was to sit inside the truck while someone ran a hose all over the front of it. A bit of RTV over the hole and problem solved. Of course this had been going on for years and aided in rotting out the floorboard.

Nope, no write off; the bodyshop was awesome as they took photos of both the exterior and interior to show the insurance how it was amazing condition, and to help convince them that it was worth fixing,  and that it wasn't just some 30 year old pos beater truck.

The quote was around $2700ish. The insurance just deposited what the original quote was and said I can go on my own and find a shop that can fix it.

I'm praying for you man: I assume it still drives perfectly fine? Honestly it doesn't look too bad: replace the grille, headlight, bumper, and realign the hood and you're laughing.

Your truck looks in perfect condition, should be enough to convince them to at least cut you a check.

Yeah, it seems to drive the same. I hadn't actually driven it for almost 10 months due to life getting in the way. I was in the middle of replacing a bunch of parts on it and doing a mini restoration. That is the issue I am trying to convey to the insurance. The body shops around here are just giving me the run around saying it'll be 4+ weeks just for an estimate. I got an estimate on parts from the Nissan dealer and made a similar list on Rock auto. If the girl just pays me for that I will just cancel the insurance claim... It will be better for her in the end too.

The insurance is just being a hindrance at this point. What the fskc do you even pay it for?

And thanks. One thing is for sure. Once I get it repaired I am going to start driving it more. Undercoat the crap out of it and drive it in the winter... What's the point of trying to preserve it if someone can just do this.

  3. I installed a block heater (OEM style) on my 02 xterra with the VG33ER when I replaced the engine. The factory location is the third one back on the drivers side frost plug. Wasn't hard to install but I had the engine out of the truck... It does make a huge difference though, I have heat before I even leave my driveway and the engine doesn't sound like a bag of marbles.

So sorry, something similar happened to me last year. The bodyshop couldn't find any parts, so the insurance just sent me a cheque for what the bodyshop quoted me for the repairs.

Did they write it off and mark it as salvage brand on the paperwork? That is my fear with going thru insurance... I have a claim open right now but am hoping to do a cash deal with the person.

The one body shop I called pissed me off, told me it would be a 4 week wait for an estimate, and then they would just mark it as a total loss anyways.

Plenty of rust-free WD21s going begging over here in Australia.

They are almost exclusively rust free and no-one wants them sadly.

If it wasn't a billion dollars to get one over here I probably would have done that already. Then there is the fact it is RHD, though it would probably be pretty simple to convert to LHD with a parts truck...

  6. Sweet! I'm clearly not as tall as you (only 6' exactly) but can confirm the rear hatch is heavy as hell. Had it fall on me once.

I bet you could clearance them easily with a small bit on a die grinder or dremel

  7. Glad to hear it.

I remember when my dad had his 93 pathfinder (when I was in high school) the rear tires would rub if you had a couple passengers in the back and went over a big dip in the road or some train tracks, lol.

  8. I recall the last time I changed my hatch struts that it required me to remove the ball/stud they sit on from the tailgate and truck body, and replace them with slightly different ones that were more universal, there's clips that hold it onto the strut now. I was actually just at a store (princess auto in canada) like harbour freight. And they had all sorts of different lengths. So perhaps that would be a good route to go?

Otherwise I bet even replacing your springs with OE replacements would raise it up a good 3". Most are terribly sagged by now. Does yours rub the rear tires on large bumps/dips in the road?

Ya, it's an XE and it is super clean and it's 30 years old and you can barely get parts for them, even from Japan. That's a hard pass for me. And if you don't have the cash on hand to purchase it outright, you're not likely to get it financed.... Nice, but no.

Yeah... Seems like normal parts for tune ups, brakes, etc are easy to get but god forbid you want your parking brake to work. You can't even get the parts for the rear disk parking brake setup anymore.
