  1. Thanks to all that took the time to reply. Based on the responses, I'm going to replace the cat. I still haven't sorted out the procedure for running the error codes but I'll keep trying. Bruce
  2. Hi Folks, I have a 95 with 185K miles that recently started to stall when I come to a stop or when I make a turn at slow speeds. When this happens I get a heavy rotten egg smell. It would usually last a few minutes and then would go away, it happened again yesterday and lasted almost 24 hours. Money is really tight and I'd like to fix this on my own rather than take it to the shop. I wanted to run the error codes but I'm confused about the procedure. I have the FSM, here's what it says: (1) Turn ignition on, (don't start engine) (2) Bulb check (3) Turn the test mode selector on the ECU fully clockwise (4) Read the number of flashes, 1 thru 5 times ( What do I do with this info? ) (5) Turn the test mode selector fully counter clockwise, ( then what?? ) I suspect the O2 sensor and wanted to run the diagnostics in Mode I but I'm not sure I'm doing it right. If I could get someone with experience on the rotten egg smell or the test procedure, I'd appreciate it, thanks! Bruce
  3. It's hot here already and with the AC on and sitting in traffic, the temp gage needle will rise to about 40%. Prior to the new radiator, it would go above halfway on the gage to about 60%. The truck has never run hot but changing the radiator has only made things better. Thanks! BD
  4. Well, I went to LA yesterday morning and pulled the car over to Phoenix with no issues. I used a tow bar like unccpathfinder recommended and it worked out really well. I used a 5,000 lb adjustable unit from Uhaul, cost was $160. Pulling the car through the desert was no problem at all, for the most part I didn't even know it was back there. My gas mileage was 14 mpg on the way back, better than I expected. Prior to the trip, I installed a new radiator and a Hayden #678 trans cooler and I have them hooked up in series. The truck runs really cool now, maybe in time I'll bypass the factory cooler. Thanks to everyone that provided feedback!! BD
  5. I believe the VG30E started in 1984 and ran thru 1995. I've done the timing belt / waterpump maintenance on a 1985 Z and just recently on my 1995 Pathy. Things were pretty much the same.
  6. I found my project car, its a 1988 Porsche 944 N/A, over in Los Angeles. I'm going to use the Pathy and a tow-bar to get it back to Phoenix. By flat-towing the car, I reduce the amount of weight being towed by 600 to 700 pounds and I eliminate the tongue weight completely. I bought a Hayden transmission cooler, (#678) the installation seems pretty straight forward. Since more is better, do I want to use some compressed air or some type of fluid to clean/flush the OE cooler and then hook up the Hayden in a series connection? What's the opinion / What have others done here? Thanks...Bruce
  7. Thanks for all the additional feedback. Temperatures will be over 100 this week and soon it'll get really hot. I'm going to install an oiler cooler before I make any decisions but I'm probably going to use the Pathy to tow a car. I've towed boats, campers, motorcycles and jet skis but this was quite a few years ago and I was towing with an F250 4X4. There are no side roads through the desest from Phoenix to So Cal but I like the idea of keeping it real slow. During last weekends trip to Cal, I noticed all the vehicles that were towing a vehicle were traveling around 50 mph. I'll post an update on the trip if I use the Pathy. Again thanks for taking the time to respond! BD
  8. The official reason U-Haul doesn’t allow me to tow these cars is that the Pathy doesn’t weigh enough. Hey no problem, I live in the desert so I’m thinking sand-bags!! LOL I went over to Indio/Palm Springs, CA earlier today to look at two cars. The trip over was a bear because of the headwind. I swear it took a tank and a half to drive 275 miles. The bonus was on the return to Phoenix, lots of tail wind, used just a little gas. The terrain is pretty flat using I-10 from Phoenix into Southern Cal and there were very few vehicles on the road. On the way I saw lots of vehicles being towed, many used a tow-bar rather than a dolly. Twice I saw an older Toyota, 4X4, extra cab, loaded with stuff towing another older Toyota 4X4, extra cab. Both times a tow-bar was used. I also saw an old 2WD, regular cab Toyota towing a Corolla. I think the engine in the Pathy can do it and the braking distance is something you have to plan for. It’s my transmission I’m concerned about. I think if I had a 5 speed, the project car would be in my garage by now. I don’t know anyone with a full size pickup and the transporter companies want too much to do the job. Thanks again for all the feedback. BD
  9. Thanks for the responses everyone. Seems the replies in this post matched what I've read in the archives. Some say it can be done, others say don't do it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, thanks again! BD
  10. I've searched/read a number of posts regarding the towing capacity but didn't seem to get any kind of consensus on what can safely be done. I'm getting the itch to get another project car and I've narrowed it down to either a 300ZX turbo or a Porsche 944. I've owned and worked on both before, I'll be happy with either. Both cars weigh approximately 3,000 to 3,100 pounds. The reason I need to tow is that there aren't many cars available here in Phoenix but just across the border in Southern Cal, there are many, many to choose from and at nice prices. I was hoping to rent a car dolly from U-Haul but their system says it shouldn't be done. I believe the towing capacity on the Pathy is 3,500 lbs and that's what my hitch is rated at also. The drive is simple, no real hills to climb, all freeway. I have an auto transmission and don't want to burn it out either and I have no external tranny oil cooler. What has anyone else done? TIA!! Bruce
  11. Thanks for the feedback Alkorahil, I know that replacing the compressor/clutch assembly is the best longterm solution. However, money is really tight right now and I would like to hopefully find a lower cost fix to the problem. unccpathfinder, thanks for the offer. I have another compressor with a good clutch. I assume it's good, I've applied voltage to it and got the clutch to "click - engage". If I could figure out how to successfully swap out the clutches, my repair wouldn't cost me anything. I'm gonna scan the auto service ads on Craigslist and see if I can find an ac tech that can do the job for a reasonable price.
  12. Hi Folks, I have a 1995 V6 with auto. It's starting to warm up here in Phoenix and I'm having a problem with my ac clutch. The system blows really COLD air but when I turn off the ac, or the compressor cycles off, the clutch won't fully disengage and makes a hell of a racket. Another way of describing it is that I can't spin the clutch disc on the compressor when the engine is turned off. The ac compressor is really accessible for working on, has anyone ever replaced their clutch? The FSM writeup seems pretty straight forward but they assume the compressor is out of the truck and also callout some special tools. Thanks!
  13. Thanks to all that took the time to reply. I'll be changing my trans fluid / filter, checking the tension on the drive belts and loosening the T-belt a little, real soon. Bruce
  14. Hi Everybody, I've got a 95XE V6, 160K on the motor. I recently changed my timing belt, tensioner, front oil seals, waterpump and drive belts, all parts are Nissan/OE. I tensioned the belt with the 90 degree/twist method. When I start the truck when the engine is cold I get a high pitch whine that sounds like a turbo. It slowly fades away after about 5 minutes. I'm going back in to check the belt tension, can anyone think of anything else I should be looking at while I'm in there? TIA Bruce
