Headlight retrofit

Hello everyone. Just wanted to share my headlight retrofit with you guys. This is my 6th set of lights that I have retrofitted so far and and by far the easiest. The factory lights were super easy to separate and has plenty of room inside. I ended up the morimoto d2s 4.0 since I had those lying around. There are definately more projector choices out there but will require more custom work. The 4.0’s work well with our lights and use oem d2s bulbs which is a plus.

I don’t have any output shots. I took apart my throttle body to replace the IACV gasket. When I went to put the new one on I realized it was the wrong part so I have to overnight a new one. It’s currently stuck in the garage lol. I’ll try to get pictures once I can move it.

Quick write up of the retrofit process. This is for the facelift r50 with plastic lens headlights.

Parts list (I get most of my stuff from theretrofitsource.com)

D2S 4.0 (replaced by the 5.0 now)

Morimoto HID kit with relay harness

Apollo 1.0 shrouds

I don’t have pictures of some of the steps but it’s pretty self explanatory.

First remove headlights and bake in the oven for 10 minutes at 200-205 degrees (wife gave me a funny look here). I set mine on a baking sheet with foil so the plastic doesn’t melt.

Take them out of the oven and separate the lens from the housing. Start by prying from the top of headlights and work your way around. It shouldn’t take much effort at all. If it’s a struggle then bake a few minutes longer.

Once you have the lens separated u will want to remove the headlight bulb lens thing in the middle.

next step is to remove the 2 adjusting screws all the way out and pop off the ball mount for the reflector

Once everything is separated you will need to grind down the back of the reflector so that the projector will sit flat and also have enough thread protruding to put the lock ring on. A belt sander makes quick work and keeps it nice and flat. Make sure you try and keep the surfaces flat (same amount removed all around).

Next install the projector, centering ring, and locknut. The centering ring helps align the projectors so that they are horizontal (benefits of our h4 lights).

The Apollo shroud will be a tad too big to fit our reflector so this gets trimmed on the bottom.

The shrouds can be glued in with silicone. I used some window butyl rubber to hold mine on and never had problems falling off. The projectors are also dual beam so don’t forget to plug in the high beam solenoid wire.

With the new projectors mounted go ahead and bolt the reflectors back into the housing. Place the lens on top and set in the oven to reheat the glue. Press everything back together and enjoy your new headlights.

So finally got the IACV fixed and managed to get the pathfinder outside for a couple output shots. It’s raining and windy today in the great pacific nw so my pictures are terrible. I also have 2 slight issues with the lights. First one is the the bulbs are mismatched in color. Im using old bulbs so that’s an easy fix with new bulbs. The second issue is the rotation is slightly off. The passenger headlight is rotated down towards the right side a big. 6bd80f0d1236eb9270eff43288627c5a.jpg733276eb8126ba89598b7edca91a614a.jpgGood thing is I don’t have to separate the headlights to fix them but I might have to take the headlights off the car so I can fit some channel locks in there to rotate them a bit.

Great write up! I’m curious, what would you say is the ballpark cost of the retrofit (if you had to buy the lights - I realize you didn’t)?

If I had to guess I would somewhere around 300-350 for all the parts. That’s the HID kit, projectors, and shrouds.

To the people with 2000-2004 pathfinders, there are retrofit projector headlights on ebay. just letting yall know. they go for around $150-$300 but look and seem pretty nice and not cheaply made. heres the link - https://www.ebay.com/itm/PATHFINDER-R50-MK2-00-04-5D-LED-Halo-Projector-Headlight-Chrome-for-NISSAN-LHD/133227693433?fits=Model%3APathfinder&hash=item1f04fd4579:g:chAAAOSwLEtdvs8B

Just an FYI those are halogen projectors. They still use a h1 halogen bulb. Mine are done with true HID projectors and use a D2S bulb. The light output wouldn’t even be the same but they do look nice.

I read the description of the headlights and they said they are HID compatible, they just don’t include the HID bulbs, they come with halogens though.

Finally had a chance to take some crappy pictures this morning on the way to work. It’s been raining so much here in Seattle and I only drive the pathfinder on weekends so it’s been tough trying to get some decent photos. Sorry but these are taken on my iPhone. The cutoff of these projectors are amazing with super sharp lines and nice color. Light output is so good now that I don’t even need to use my oem driving/fog lights anymore.
