Accelerator pedal has lots of play now

My accelerator pedal has lots of play now after some small black hard rubber bushing broke between the end of the throttle cable and the accelerator pedal arm. I can only get to about 3/4 throttle.

 

Has anyone had this happen? It looks like the throttle cable end ferrule is crimped on. I don't see how it can be replaced. It almost looks like you have to replace the whole assembly. I hope not!

Eric the Car Guy on Youtube fixed a similar issue on a Mustang a while back by putting a zip tie around the end of the cable between the pedal and the ferrule to take up the space (stretch in his case). Also have a look at the other end of the cable, where it hooks to the throttle; I don't know how the VQ cables are set up (my dad's was drive-by-wire) but if it's like my WD21, you should have two nuts holding the cable sheath to the bracket, allowing you to adjust the cable tension.

R50's are still a cable driven design unlike the wife's '08 Sentra...A hurkyjerky throttle response for sure.

 

One of things I always liked about PF's is just how subtlety one can feather the loud pedal.

 

You may have just got a dud throttle cable housing that failed. MY suggestion would be to get one from the JY. It's an easy re & re. Remove a couple of bolts/nuts & remove each cable end knob from thier slide/turn sockets. Suggest lubricating assy cable well b4 reinstallation.

My cable adjustment was already at the limit. I thought about the zip tie method, but I figured the little bushing was there to soften the throttle tip in, and the sheath was deteriorating anyway, so I decided to replace it.

 

The throttle end isn't removable. So you have to get a whole assembly with inside mounting plate. It is removed and installed from inside. I didn't want to mess around with a junkyard assembly that could already be deteriorating.

 

It was $90 delivered from Nissanpartsdeal.com. Courtesy parts website had the wrong part number.

 

The actual install was very easy, aside from the awkwardness and limited space under the dash. It took 1 hour.

I doubt it would soften tip-in enough to matter, but it might reduce the shock load trying to stretch the cable if the throttle body hits its stop before the pedal does.

For $90 I still would've used a zip tie :lol: but either way, good to see you got it!

The plastic had worn completely off the steel coil sheath in many places. And in the pic where you can see the steel cable, that shouldn't be possible. It is molded and crimped together from the gasket on the inside bracket to the throttle knob exit.

 

The pedal didn't seem to be binding. But I didn't want to try my luck. If I was limping the truck along for less than a year, I wouldn't have done it. But I'm still trying to keep it as my daily driver as long as possible.

 

The pedal feel is much nicer than it's been in years.
