nicksatthelake
hi im trying to fill my time with getting this little guy into shape im just not quite sure how to go about getting the transmission oil pan off to change the filter and gasket. Ive read that I would have to take the crossmember off but im worried about doing that do I need to have the pathy jacked up should I jack up on the transmission and where should I do it at so I do not damage the transmission from the outside do I have to worry about the pathy failing apart with me under it while doing this? please help and thank you id like to get it in the best shape I can. Slartibartfast
I'm pretty sure you do have to drop the exhaust to get the pan out, but I didn't bother with mine. I've read that the pan filter is more like a strainer than a filter (it'll keep the big chunks out, but if there are big chunks in your pan, your trans has bigger problems), so I decided not to bother with it. I flushed the fluid, installed an aftermarket filter in line with the trans cooler, and called that good enough.
adamzan
and Im not taking the exhaust off its not worth the broken bolts Well I guess you're not taking off the pan then lol. There was a way you could do it without, by removing some pickup tube but its a huge pain in the ass. I just unbolted the 3 nuts from the passenger side manifold and pried the pipe down enough. If they didn't break on mine in Canada I'm sure yours will be fine.

I installed the after market cooler and i just drained and filled the transmission fluid didn't really flush it but the fluid looked fine honestly no particles or anything but it did smell pretty funny but i think itll be alright im planning on adding a inline filter soon and draining and filling one more time

RedPath88
If your talking about the heat shield bolts, then yes, those bolts break. But I am fairly sure that Adam was referring to the flange bolts. At 290k miles I removed mine and not a single flange bolt broke. Edit: PB Blaster is your friend!
